This book provides a history of Cambodia from ancient times to the present, examining themes such as the country's location between Thailand and Vietnam and the effects on its politics and society. Previous surveys of Cambodian history are outdated or rely on secondary sources, so this book aims to synthesize new scholarship and primary sources into a comprehensive narrative history for both specialists and general readers. The chapters cover the major periods of Cambodian history from the beginnings through the Angkor era, the post-Angkor period, the rise of French influence, independence, the Khmer Rouge regime, and events since the 1980s.
