Adverbs of Manner

+ Adjectives  An adjectives is a word that describes nouns and pronouns ( person, place, or thing) and they generally appear before the word they modify. Adjective + Noun I’m a patient person. He’s not a good singer. He’s a fast driver. She's a careful driver.
+ Adverbs  An adverb of manner is a word that describes how something happens, and they generally appear after the verb or the object. Verb + Adverb of Manner I wait patiently in lines. He doesn’t sing very well. He drives very fast. She drives carefully.
+ Form RULE EXAMPLE We form most adverbs of manner by adding –ly to the adjective. quiet – quietly careful - carefully Adjectives ending in a consonant + -y, drop the –y and take –ily. easy - easily Adjectives ending in -le, drop the – e an take –y. terrible - terribly Irregular adverbs good – well fast – fast hard – hard late – late early - early
+ Review  As we saw in the previous slides the adverbs of manner tell us how someone does something or how something happens. They usually come after the main verb. He drank quickly.[after the verb] He drank the water quickly. [after the object] He drank quickly the water. [ NOT between the verb and object]
