A version of the popular problem-solving task involves presenting people with an array of 42 pictures, seven rows of six pictures each, and asking them to indentify the target picture by asking questions that can be answered yes or no. Further, people are then required to identify the picture with as few questions as possible. Suggest the most efficient algorithm for this problem and indicate the largest number of questions that may be necessary. Solution Well each question could feasibly half the number of pictures. Q1 makes 21. Q2 makes 10/11. Q3 makes 5/6. Q4 makes 2/3. Q5 makes 1/2. Q6 makes 1. So 6 questions may be necessary. you can also do 2^n>42 where n is an element of z (integers) and that would be 6..

A twenty-five-year-old, single American manager has just accepted a .pdf

A twenty-five-year-old, single American manager has just accepted a transfer to a job in China.
She is excited about going to China, as she has never been there before. After all, she loves
Chinese food! You have been asked to prepare her for the cultural aspects of this new job
assignment. FIRST, research China in terms of culture and business practices. Consider the
adjustment that this young manager will have to make and assume that she will be supervising
local employees and doing business with Chinese companies. THEN, create a training plan for
this employee. What training should she receive before she leaves, and what should she learn
after her arrival in China? Incorporate your assessment of the key success factors for this
individual (i.e., the things she needs to know to ensure that she can perform well in this
unfamiliar environment). Be sure to identify specific training methodologies and content for this
training plan. Also, discuss at least three potential problems that she might have in her transition
and how you would address them.
Solution
Cultural differences between both the countries are listed below:
Americans prefer the individualist culture as they value self-reliance. Contrary to this Chinese
prefer group cooperation.
Americans utilize informal and egalitarian approach in their social relationships. While Chinese
believe in strict hierarchical and formal model.
In the US people avoid interpersonal relationships and long-term obligations. Contrary to this,
Chinese prefer relationships with reciprocal obligation.
Americans sincerely follows the written rules and regulations; while Chinese largely focus on
personal relationships rather than written policies.
Difference in Cognitive process or thinking patterns of both the countries is elaborated below:
China’s initiative thinking pattern and problem solving techniques specify that various paths
could reach the same targets and in reality no path is dissimilar from others since all paths comes
under mutually defining flattering association. This approach reflects the subjective and
accommodative cultural style of interaction in China.
The rational thinking model of the US is comprised of linearity, objectivity, justification and
manipulation in the process of interaction. In the US, the instinctive approach to thinking with
delicate and indirect expression style is dictated by axiological agreement.
Due to huge cultural gap, the American manger should receive the following training before she
leaves for China:
Cross cultural training that focus on the culture and values of Chinese culture
Diversity training regarding specific compliance, anti-discrimination and legal norms and
policies.
Training providing a detailed description regarding the factors that motivate and demotivate the
Chinese workers.
Behavioral training regarding the nature and behavior of Chinese employees.
The manger would face the following problems while going through the transition phase:
Behavioral tran.

A tourist visiting New York City had his wallet stolen in an elevator. The thief had to be Lillian,
Judy, David, Theo or Margaret. When questioned by the police, each suspect made three
statements:
Lillian:
I didn\'t take the wallet.
I have never in my life stolen anything.
Theo did it.
Judy:
I didn\'t take the wallet.
My daddy is rich enough, and I have a wallet of my own.
Margaret knows who did it.
David:
I didn\'t take the wallet.
I didn\'t know Margaret before I came into the elevator.
Theo did it.
Theo:
I am not guilty.
Margaret did it.
Lillian is lying when she says I stole the wallet.
Margaret:
I didn\'t take the wallet.
Judy is guilty.
David can vouch for me because he has known me since I was born.
Later, each person admitted that two of his/her statements were true and one was false.
Assuming this is true, who stole the wallet?

Solution
Judy stole the wallet. notice, just find the lies.. start with theo, his only lie could be
saying margaret did it because he would be contradicting himself otherwise. so theo didnt do it,
and that leads us to lillian and david\'s lies now that tells us margarets lie, and makes one of her
truths that judy stole the wallet.. Lillian: (T)I didn\'t take the wallet. (T)I have never in my life
stolen anything. (F)Theo did it. Judy: (F)I didn\'t take the wallet. (T)My daddy is rich enough,

A total of 10 people, consisting of 5 married couples, are randomley.pdf

A total of 10 people, consisting of 5 married couples, are randomley seated in a row for a photo.
Let Ci denote the event that the ith couple are seated next to each other, i=1....5, and X be the
total number of couples that are seated next to each other.
a) find P(Ci) (i know this is 2/10)
b) for j not eqaul to I, find the cond. probability that P(Cj/Ci)
c) Find the expeted value for E[x] and var(X) of X.
Thank you, DETAILED EXPLANATION!
Solution
a) P(Ci)
we can consider ith couple as one unit and other 8 persons as individuals.
Thus, no. of arrangements = 2 * 9!
Total no. of possible arrangements = 10!
Thus, P(Ci) = 2 * 9! / 10! = 2/10 = 1/5
b) P(Cj|Ci)
Now, we have Ci as a couple, Cj as a couple
No. of possible cases = 2 * 2 * 8! = 4 * 8!
Total possible cases = 2 * 9!
Thus, P(Cj|Ci) = 4 * 8! / 2 * 9! = 2/9.

A beginner’s guide to project reviews - everything you wanted to know but wer...Association for Project Management

APM event held on 9 July in Bristol.
Speaker: Roy Millard
The SWWE Regional Network were very pleased to welcome back to Bristol Roy Millard, of APM’s Assurance Interest Group on 9 July 2024, to talk about project reviews and hopefully answer all your questions.
Roy outlined his extensive career and his experience in setting up the APM’s Assurance Specific Interest Group, as they were known then.
Using Mentimeter, he asked a number of questions of the audience about their experience of project reviews and what they wanted to know.
Roy discussed what a project review was and examined a number of definitions, including APM’s Bok: “Project reviews take place throughout the project life cycle to check the likely or actual achievement of the objectives specified in the project management plan”
Why do we do project reviews? Different stakeholders will have different views about this, but usually it is about providing confidence that the project will deliver the expected outputs and benefits, that it is under control.
There are many types of project reviews, including peer reviews, internal audit, National Audit Office, IPA, etc.
Roy discussed the principles behind the Three Lines of Defence Model:, First line looks at management controls, policies, procedures, Second line at compliance, such as Gate reviews, QA, to check that controls are being followed, and third Line is independent external reviews for the organisations Board, such as Internal Audit or NAO audit.
Factors which affect project reviews include the scope, level of independence, customer of the review, team composition and time.
Project Audits are a special type of project review. They are generally more independent, formal with clear processes and audit trails, with a greater emphasis on compliance. Project reviews are generally more flexible and informal, but should be evidence based and have some level of independence.
Roy looked at 2 examples of where reviews went wrong, London Underground Sub-Surface Upgrade signalling contract, and London’s Garden Bridge. The former had poor 3 lines of defence, no internal audit and weak procurement skills, the latter was a Boris Johnson vanity project with no proper governance due to Johnson’s pressure and interference.
Roy discussed the principles of assurance reviews from APM’s Guide to Integrated Assurance (Free to Members), which include: independence, accountability, risk based, and impact, etc
Human factors are important in project reviews. The skills and knowledge of the review team, building trust with the project team to avoid defensiveness, body language, and team dynamics, which can only be assessed face to face, active listening, flexibility and objectively.
