Africa RISING in the Ethiopian Highlands
On going work
- Address the huge knowledge gap on HVT both at lower
and national level through training
- Continue the on-going research monitoring growth
parameters, address fruit shading problem to have a
complete understanding (from establishment, flowering
fruiting quality and marketing), to provide evidence for
scaling
Intensifying with high value trees in Africa RISING Ethiopia for food and
nutrition security, income and climate resilient farming
Aster Gebrekirstos and Hadia Seid (ICRAF)
Goal
The goal is to facilitate the scaling up and scaling out of high value
trees and their management practices that have been validated by
Africa RISING Phase I, at homestead, farm and landscapes to
improve household income, food, nutritional security, and
contribute in creating resilient ecosystem and society.

Apple tree varieties: apple is a temperate fruit tree
with huge potential in the high lands of Ethiopia.
Technologies to scale
Improved avocado varieties: avocados are one of the world’s
healthiest and nutritious foods and there is high local demand.
Targeted and potential beneficiary households for high
value trees innovations.
