The paper presents a novel population-based local search (pb-ls) approach for solving the nurse rostering problem (NRP), demonstrating its effectiveness using a dataset of 69 instances from the INRC2010 database. The proposed method combines population-based and local search techniques to explore and exploit the solution space while minimizing the number of parameters required for tuning. Results indicate that pb-ls outperformed existing methods, achieving the best results in 55 out of 69 instances tested.
