Strengthening European Cultural
Heritage
&
the Emergence of European Citizenship
Through
Language and Art
"The Greek language deserves to be learned
and loved; for its virtues, but mainly
because it has been the means of
expression of a great civilization. A
civilization, which, at the beginning of its
long duration, shaped and codified the first
and statutory layer of the higher
vocabulary and concepts of Western
civilization, (...)
The Greek language deserves to be
honored both because it is a valuable
legacy for the Western world, and because
it is irreplaceable as the foundation of the
Hellenic national identity."
J. N. Kazazis, president of the Centre for
the Greek Language.
The legacy of the Greek language
https://www.thinglink.com/scene/1415411463824080897
The European Union is, by definition, a contact place of more cultures
and more languages, the languages spoken by its member states.
(…)
“…. What we call European Civilization is a total of values, principles,
concepts, beliefs and forms of the culture that have resulted from the
contribution –greater or lesser, earlier or later in time– of all the
European countries and all its nations. Historically, a crucial part of
this contribution is due to the classical languages, Greek and Latin…”
The challenge of multilingualism and the role of
the Greek language on other European languages
by Georgios Babiniotis, a Greek linguist and philologist
(…)What has happened with the Greek language as a historical-cultural
event is that with the turn towards classical learning that took place in
Europe especially during the Renaissance (14th to 17th centuries) Europe
came to know, to study and be influenced by the great Greek thinkers of
ancient times:
• philosophers (Plato, Aristotle),
• poets (Homer),
• tragedians (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes),
• historians (Herodotus, Thucydides),
• physicians (Hippocrates, Galenos),
• orators (Demosthenes, Isocrates),
• grammarians (Dionysius, Apollonius and others).
The above are among those great spirits of human thought that have
marked with their works the way of thinking in Europe. Basic concepts,
with which human thought functions, ideas, concepts, institutions, values,
attitudes, and so on, have gone through the texts of the great writers and
established themselves in European languages through the words used
by the Greeks. (….)
(…) Ladies and Gentlemen, the aim of my talk has not been to show
that the Greek language is superior to all other languages! All
European languages should be made better known to more
people, inside and outside Europe. Besides and beyond the
geographical boundaries of Europe lie the cultural boundaries
of Europe for which we should always think the words of
Ludwig Wittgenstein:
The limits of our language mean the limits of our
world.

Following thus the thoughts of prominent linguists, we
attempted a co-reading
between the ancient Greek Sophocles and the British
Shakespeare...
ANTIGONE-SOPHOCLES
HAMLET-SHAKESPEARE
“The co-reading”
The co-reading
Antigone and Hamlet. Hamlet and Antigone.
Two theatrical masterpieces, one of ancient Greek drama and
one of the most brilliant pages of European drama, will meet
today, here, in front of you.
And this is not a coincidence.
Ancient Greek tragedy founded and raised the edifice which
European drama raised to heaven.
Characters, their passions and difficulties traveled from ancient
Athens to Elisabethean England through time and the pages of
theatrical and literary works, with the inspiration of the creators
and the methexis of the viewers as a vehicle.
They traveled and changed. They traveled and stayed the same.
Antigone and Hamlet fight for the vindication of their dead
against a ruthless and dishonest power.
At any cost, in the name of love and honor.
And today, Hamlet and Antigone, three supporting characters
and the narrator who will join the threads are here, in front of
you, to remind you of the greatest message:
Love is strength.
Love is the myth.
Love is power.
Love is life.
Chorus
Her name is Antigone
And if her father is also a brother
And the curses of men reach the ears of the
gods
And if she sees the honor as superior to the laws
Open your eyes and ears, good viewer
And see the unfortunate woman in a grave to
seal her freshness.
• Α: Creon was the culprit
• Β: He stepped on the law
• Α: Of men, not of gods
• Β:He stepped on the law
• A: Creonwastheculprit
Antigone
Unwept, unfriended, without marriage-song, I am
led in misery on this journey that cannot be put
off. No longer is it permitted me, unhappy girl, to
look up at this sacred eye of the burning sun.
I will descend, even before the fated term of my
life is spent.
Οnce I have suffered my doom I will come to
know my guilt. But if the guilt lies with my judges,
I could wish for them no greater evils.
Narrator
How does darkness clothe the moonlit?
How an inhuman fate she welcomes before
enjoying the gifts of love?
In any case, the dreadful death for everybody is
the end
Danish prince, Hamlet his name, used to say
Grave digger
This skull has been in the ground for more than
twenty years. It belonged to another mad
fellow-Yorick, the old King’s jester.
Hamlet
Alas, poor Yorick, I knew him Horatio.
He often played with me when I was very young.
He was always smiling as he made his jokes.
Poor fellow, he’s not smiling now!
There’ s no escape Horatio.
A woman paints her face to keep her beauty.
But she’ll still end like this.
Great Alexander ruled the world and Ceasar
governed Rome.
Now both are dust and all their power has gone.
Chorus
• BUT…
• BEGORE THAT…
• AND AFTER…
• AND FOREVER…
• Love, the unconquered in battle,
• Love, you who descend upon riches,
• and watch the night through on a girl's soft
cheek,
• you roam over the sea and among the homes of
men in the wilds.
• Neither can any immortal escape you,
• nor any man whose life lasts for a day.
• He who has known you is driven into madness.
I was born to love, not to hate

  • 14. Grave digger This skull has been in the ground for more than twenty years. It belonged to another mad fellow-Yorick, the old King’s jester.
  • 15. Hamlet Alas, poor Yorick, I knew him Horatio. He often played with me when I was very young. He was always smiling as he made his jokes. Poor fellow, he’s not smiling now! There’ s no escape Horatio. A woman paints her face to keep her beauty. But she’ll still end like this. Great Alexander ruled the world and Ceasar governed Rome. Now both are dust and all their power has gone.
  • 16. Chorus • BUT… • BEGORE THAT… • AND AFTER… • AND FOREVER…
  • 17. • Love, the unconquered in battle, • Love, you who descend upon riches, • and watch the night through on a girl's soft cheek, • you roam over the sea and among the homes of men in the wilds. • Neither can any immortal escape you, • nor any man whose life lasts for a day. • He who has known you is driven into madness.
  • 18. I was born to love, not to hate
