Bhutan has a negative balance of payment with India due to excessive imports. Some key causes are informal trading, tax evasion, foreign expertise, and an economy that has liberalized. Bhutan imports far more agricultural products than it exports, with the top imports by value being meat, sugar, vegetables, fruits, and cereals. There is an anticipation that developing rural and agricultural sectors through various levels, from kitchen gardening to export-oriented farming, could help address Bhutan's trade imbalance.
