Network Concepts

 1. 1. Telecommunication system
It transmits sound, images, text and video, in an electronic way using a communication channel that can be a telephone, microwaves, satellite, etc.
The components of a telecommunication system are: server, workstations, peripheral devices, network devices and communication channels.
2. 2. Network
It is a set of computers and other devices that communicate between each other to share data, hardware and software.
The components of a network are:

Server
 3. 3. Workstations
 4. 4. Network devices
 5. 5. Communication channel
 6. 6. Network operating system

Modem
It is a device in charge of transforming the digital signals of the computer into a analog signals to travel through the network and vice versa.
7. 7. Advantages of a network

Share hardware and software
 8. 8. Share information
 9. 9. Send information from any place

INTERNET
The most impact world wide network is Internet. This one started in the seventies as a communication network of the United States Defense Department, when it was name as ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network).
Later it was use to communicate research departments of several universities to share information between them.
10. 10. Types of networks
LAN (Local Area Network): It is a network that connects personal computers in a reduce area, like a bank.
WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network): It is a local network that doesn’t need any cable, everything is wireless and it has a range of about 150 m.
WAN (Wide Area Network): It is a network that covers a large geographical area, for example Internet.
11. 11. MAN ( Metropolitan Area Network): It transmits data and voice in a range of about several tens of kilometers, for example the ISP (Internet Service Provider), which provides Internet services to any kind of users.
12. 12. Communication channels
13. 13. Network topology
Topology is the physical way the computers are connected to each other.
Types of topology
Bus: It uses a central line where all the workstation are connected.
Star: There is one computer, the server, where all the rest of the smaller computers, usually name as workstations, are connected.
Ring: It is a set of computers, of exactly the same size, that are connected to each other.
