This exhibition presents the contributions made for Upcycling Art, Craft and Design
Competition 2021 organised by School of Art, Design and Architecture and School of
Fashion and Textiles at De Montfort University (DMU). The competition aimed to contribute
to UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 Responsible Consumption and Production. We
called for beautiful art pieces, meaningful artefacts or useful products created through
various upcycling processes utilising used or waste products and materials. DMU students,
alumni, staff, their families and friends, and community people entered this competition. The
competition was funded by DMU Sustainability Team and in partnership with LCB Depot.
The awardees are Tim Neath (Gold); Katarzyna Bigaj and Nicole Lander (Silver); and
Christina Wigmore, Issy Staniaszek, Jenny McIlhatton and Millie Rees (Bronze).

ART, CRAFT AND DESIGN EXHIBITION
Working From Home by Tim Neath
Working From Home by Tim Neath
“Working from Home (2021) is made in response to the first Lockdown of the 2020 Covid-
19 pandemic. […] Inspired by a brief behind the scenes shot from the end credits of A
Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood (2019) dir. Marielle Heller, that I connected to the
constructed apartment block that features in Rear Window (1954) dir. Alfred Hitchcock.
Using recycled cardboard and craft materials a model miniature version of the apartment
block has been constructed. Accessible through the viewfinder that was L.B. Jeffries
apartment. Both the viewfinder and apartment block have been modernised, whilst
maintaining some period features.” – Tim Neath
Tim is a visual artist based in Leicester’s cultural quarter. He studied Fine Art at Sheffield
Hallam University, graduating in 2012. Responding to the ideas and imagery found within
Hollywood/film. Working mainly with cardboard and craft materials to produce model
miniatures for photography, video and animation.
Reborn and other upcycle craft work by Katarzyna Bigaj
Reborn and other upcycle craft work by Katarzyna Bigaj
“I used empty, clean and ready body lotion plastic container to make my new treasure’s
storage. I would call it Reborn.” – Katarzyna Bigaj
Katarzyna is a lecturer in Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour
at De Montfort University. She has great passion in art and craft.
‘Can’delier and book planter by Nicole Lander
“Over a few months, I noticed how many tin cans were getting
thrown out at university and when visiting home. […] I decided to
collect a large bag of cans to repurpose the cans and ring pulls.
After considering the strengths and weaknesses of aluminium
cans I decided that the best way to create a product would be to
form the cans into shape, ultimately doing this allowed me to be
creative and experimental, carefully considering the shape,
function and aesthetics of the product. […] The product features 3
recycled LED strip lights, one battery pack in each base can.
When the product is switched on, the aluminium cans project
geometric shapes onto surrounding surfaces which adds a unique
touch and brings life into the space where the lamp is positioned.
The ‘Can’delier is a vibrant and modern product, clearly showing
an up-cycling process and careful consideration of its parts,
helping to eliminate the need to throw away cans.” – Nicole
Lander
Nicole is a BA Product Design student at De Montfort University.
Crafted Trapped Table by Christina Wigmore
“I designed and created an adaptable product (a contemporary
coffee table) which trapped recycled and crafted materials
between acrylic and glass. Aiming to test out the circular
design model I wanted to trial making a piece which involved
researching and finding local makers and production services
that supported designers with one-off or smaller scale
realisation of designs. I knitted together the reclaimed stripped
hi-fi speaker wire with stamped copper discs, hand-printed the
acrylic tiles from a collagraph print block I made from wood and
recycled fruit nets and trapped the crafted wire between the
printed acrylic tiles. I came up with a prototype table design
which used offcuts of plywood and that could be reproduced
through CNC cutting. The table is fixed together using wooden
dowels and the centre cut out holds the trapped tiles covered
with a sheet of reclaimed glass cut to size.” – Christina
Wigmore
Christina is a MA Fashion & Textiles student at De Montfort
University.
Vintage Tea Towels Upcycling Project by Issy Staniaszek
Vintage Tea Towels Upcycling Project by Issy Staniaszek
“Shortly before the first lockdown in 2020 my curiosity was sparked when rifling through a charity
shop one weekend. I have always loved vintage fabric for its bold prints and the stories it carries,
but in early 2020 it morphed into an obsession. I’d had an idea for filling my time while unemployed
by upcycling old bedsheets into useful shopping bags and things like that. I was having a lot of fun
rummaging through the oft-neglected textile bins in charity shops. In one such section, I came
across a stash of unused vintage tea towels. I was struck by both the quality of the fabric, (generally
hard-wearing cotton or linen), and by the striking graphic design. Not sure what I’d do with them, I
couldn’t help grabbing a few and taking them home to play with. Little did I know that this would be
my last trip to a charity shop for the best part of a year, but that I was about to dive into a lockdown
obsession in the world of tea towel collectors.” – Issy Staniaszek
Issy runs her sustainable crafting business called ‘Wild Brambling’ based on planet-friendly textiles
and upcycling crafts in Leicester.
Rip It Up, Start Again by Jenny McIlhatton
Rip It Up, Start Again by Jenny McIlhatton
“'Without community there is no liberation’ Audre Lorde
A sustainable community project started in January 2021, amid lockdown
3.0 in the UK. Inspired by the history of humans across a myriad of
cultures, gathering to re-purpose textiles, when nothing went to waste.
They created communities to sew, weave and quilt, sharing skills and
stories along the way. With a desire to bring a little joy through a creative
project received through the mail, to help encourage a sense of
community when we were so isolated and raise money for Labour behind
the label; who support garment workers rights globally.
85 kits full of fabric, kindly donated by Galedi couture, saved from landfill,
went out to a multicultural, mix of complete beginners through to
experienced textile artists to get creative and thinking about ways in
which we can use textiles more sustainably.” – Jenny McIlhatton
Jenny is a London based textile artist, born and raised in Belfast,
Northern Ireland. Her background is in fashion. Her textile art practice is
self-taught. She came to art through a desire to tell stories and heal
trauma.

Millie Jean by Millie Rees
“There are millions of unused records in the
world at present that can no longer be used
as no one has a record player anymore as it is
easier to download music onto your phone.
Denim jeans are very popular at the current
time however, they are easily worn out and
holes in them are common. My entry for the
upcycling competition are my vinyl record
bags made from old LPs and jeans that would
otherwise be thrown away.” – Millie Rees
Millie is a BA Product Design student at De
Montfort University.

Inspired by the history of humans across a myriad of cultures, gathering to re-purpose textiles, when nothing went to waste. They created communities to sew, weave and quilt, sharing skills and stories along the way. With a desire to bring a little joy through a creative project received through the mail, to help encourage a sense of community when we were so isolated and raise money for Labour behind the label; who support garment workers rights globally. 85 kits full of fabric, kindly donated by Galedi couture, saved from landfill, went out to a multicultural, mix of complete beginners through to experienced textile artists to get creative and thinking about ways in which we can use textiles more sustainably.” – Jenny McIlhatton Jenny is a London based textile artist, born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Her background is in fashion. Her textile art practice is self-taught. She came to art through a desire to tell stories and heal trauma.

Denim jeans are very popular at the current time however, they are easily worn out and holes in them are common. My entry for the upcycling competition are my vinyl record bags made from old LPs and jeans that would otherwise be thrown away.” – Millie Rees Millie is a BA Product Design student at De Montfort University.
