Universities UK survey

Universities UK survey will provide some in-person teaching next term
 a so-called "blended approach" to teaching and learning, with many universities
announcing that lectures will be given online
 Cambridge's lectures will be held online for the entire year
 Manchester, Reading and Queen's Belfast will have online lectures for the autumn term
 Aberdeen is delaying the start of next term by two weeks
 The government says university students in England will still have to pay full tuition fees
even if their courses are taught online in the autumn

No buildings from September: What on earth do we do about the learning experience?
 “We are not going back to our normal operations any time soon. This is our new normal
from September. This is not one off.”
 Hybrid modules / blended learning
 Good balance between what’s on campus and what’s off campus
 Good balance between synchronous and asynchronous

Message from the Interim Vice-Chancellor, Professor
Andy Collop (11th May, 2020)
Source: DMU staff email
 We’ve been able to carry out effective, creative and interactive teaching for our students. And
we’ve designed and rolled out what I believe is a fair online exams and assessments process which,
coupled with our no-detriment policy, will ensure our students can reach the graduate outcomes
they deserve.
 Our Estates team are already working on a plan to mark out buildings, lecture theatres, labs and
other teaching spaces for social distancing and provide protective equipment in line with
government guidelines.
 As part of the planning process, some early decisions have been taken and we’ve started to put in
the structures needed to plan properly to ensure that we are able to deliver blended first term.
 I’d like to assure you that academic and learning support colleagues will receive the training and
support they need to deliver the best possible experience for our students, whichever model of
learning and teaching is adopted.

No Detriment-(ND) policy for 2019/2020
Source: DMU staff email from Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Jackie Labbe on 3rd June 2020
 The No Detriment policy applies to work due after 30 March 2020
 If you have not attempted exams or assessments due after 30th March, or have attempted them
and failed them, your actual marks will stand and we will calculate your module results and final
outcome based on these marks. In other words, the ND policy will not be applied.
 If you have taken and passed all exams and assessments due after 30th March, the ND policy will be
applied to your results as long as we are not prevented from doing so by Professional Statutory and
Regulatory Body and/or employer requirements.
 For students eligible for the ND policy to be applied, we will calculate your outcome in two ways.
We will first determine your results from your actual marks, and then we will apply the ND policy.
The ND approach means we will calculate a benchmark for you, providing a mark based on your
prior achievements attained before 30 March. Your final outcome will be the one which gives you
the better overall result.

Established T&L principles for 2020/2021
 Teaching will start at the planned time: 5 October
 All students will need regular synchronous (live) teaching regularly (once a week at least,
face to face where this has been agreed)
 All L4 module leaders should reflect on incoming students’ disrupted learning at L3 both in
the UK and globally. This is less about making up for missed content and more about
easing students back into their learning
 All lectures (large group teaching with minimal interaction) are online and asynchronous
(except where cases for exception have been made and approved) for the whole of the
next academic year

Blended teaching with pulse education system
 It is clear that there are parts of HE that can be
delivered remotely but also that many parts
cannot.
 The pulse system offers us some flexibility in
shifting in and out of contact teaching, and an
opportunity to better manage safer
social/physical distancing on campus.
 Formal, written feedback should only need to be
delivered twice for any module.

Internal discussions
 Limited workshop access issue  change of learning outcomes  revalidation
 Asynchronous soft model making outside workshop 
studio space conversion
 Lectures: asynchronous online – all available from 5
October
 Workshops: synchronous online
 Tutorials: synchronous online + offline
 Offline pulsing timetabling
 Degree show  best graduate projects for Dezeen PR +

  • 11. Kyungeun Sung / School of Design Message from the Interim Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andy Collop (11th May, 2020) Source: DMU staff email  We’ve been able to carry out effective, creative and interactive teaching for our students. And we’ve designed and rolled out what I believe is a fair online exams and assessments process which, coupled with our no-detriment policy, will ensure our students can reach the graduate outcomes they deserve.  Our Estates team are already working on a plan to mark out buildings, lecture theatres, labs and other teaching spaces for social distancing and provide protective equipment in line with government guidelines.  As part of the planning process, some early decisions have been taken and we’ve started to put in the structures needed to plan properly to ensure that we are able to deliver blended first term.  I’d like to assure you that academic and learning support colleagues will receive the training and support they need to deliver the best possible experience for our students, whichever model of learning and teaching is adopted.
  • 12. Kyungeun Sung / School of Design No Detriment-(ND) policy for 2019/2020 Source: DMU staff email from Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Jackie Labbe on 3rd June 2020  The No Detriment policy applies to work due after 30 March 2020  If you have not attempted exams or assessments due after 30th March, or have attempted them and failed them, your actual marks will stand and we will calculate your module results and final outcome based on these marks. In other words, the ND policy will not be applied.  If you have taken and passed all exams and assessments due after 30th March, the ND policy will be applied to your results as long as we are not prevented from doing so by Professional Statutory and Regulatory Body and/or employer requirements.  For students eligible for the ND policy to be applied, we will calculate your outcome in two ways. We will first determine your results from your actual marks, and then we will apply the ND policy. The ND approach means we will calculate a benchmark for you, providing a mark based on your prior achievements attained before 30 March. Your final outcome will be the one which gives you the better overall result.
  • 13. Kyungeun Sung / School of Design Established T&L principles for 2020/2021  Teaching will start at the planned time: 5 October  All students will need regular synchronous (live) teaching regularly (once a week at least, face to face where this has been agreed)  All L4 module leaders should reflect on incoming students’ disrupted learning at L3 both in the UK and globally. This is less about making up for missed content and more about easing students back into their learning  All lectures (large group teaching with minimal interaction) are online and asynchronous (except where cases for exception have been made and approved) for the whole of the next academic year Source: DMU staff email from Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Jackie Labbe on 3rd June 2020
  • 14. Kyungeun Sung / School of Design Blended teaching with pulse education system  It is clear that there are parts of HE that can be delivered remotely but also that many parts cannot.  The pulse system offers us some flexibility in shifting in and out of contact teaching, and an opportunity to better manage safer social/physical distancing on campus.  Formal, written feedback should only need to be delivered twice for any module.
