Marketing Sanitation

 1. 2. MARKETING SANITATION
 2. 3.

Sanitation focuses on drainage and sewerage disposal.

Sanitation is a safe device for the disposal of human excreta which keeps the environment clean, protects the sources of water , regulates contamination of soil and is found technically sound.

According to Wager and Lanoix, the system of excreta disposal should not contaminate the surface , ground water that may enter springs or wells, no contamination of surface water, no handing of fresh excreta, freedom from odour.

Introduction- Sanitation
 3. 4.

Sanitation facilities to be covered in both urban and rural areas.

The upward moving urban population due to migration of population from rural areas is complicating the task.

Number of global organizations eg. UNICEF,World Bank,UNDP (United Nations Development Programme),WHO,,UNCHS (United Nations Centre for Human Settlements) are very much instrumental in the process of promoting sanitation facilities.

Introduction-Population Coverage
 4. 5.

Sulabh Sauchalaya or Sulabh International, a non-governmental organization instrumental in improving the situations drastically.

In addition to the development of sanitation facilities for an individual/institution, it is found successful in promoting public sanitation centers both in the rural and urban areas.

Introduction- Population Coverage
 5. 6.

The emerging trends indicate the financial constraint obstructing the time honored expansion and development of the sanitation schemes.

The global organizations have been funding the schemes but the domestic governments fail to counter finance the same and thus the scheme remains incomplete.

The small towns should have low cost sanitation schemes for them..

Information, Education and Communication (IEC) need an intensive care to create public awareness due to which the sanitation problems aggravate.

The non-government bodies should have a mission to prevent water-borne diseases and improve health care services.

Introduction-Emerging Trends
 6. 7. Introduction - Marketing Sanitation

It is a managerial approach to make the programme cost effective .The satisfaction of users and protection of public interests are the two important dimensions of the marketing sanitation.

The marketing sanitation is considered a device to improve health care facilities.

It focuses on the organization's prosperity since the scheme is based on “pay and use” principle. The services are based on the principle of social marketing , the main theme is public or social interests.

 7. 8.

“ In view of poor sanitation facilities in India , the need of the hour is to innovate the service mix". Do you agree with this statement? Justify your answer.

Question 1
 8. 9. Service Mix

The agencies, organizations have to follow essential guidelines for developing the sanitation facilities either in rural or in the urban areas in order to formulate a service mix..

The organizations or agencies are not supposed to offer such services which either in short–run or in the long-run would create problem to environment pollution by contaminating water and soil.

There are a number of areas having a different infrastructural base and the service mix requires due weight age to the constraints or positive points of the related areas where the programme is to be implemented.

 9. 10. Service Mix

The outlet of water is also an important consideration in the service mix.

The lighting facilities also improve the quality of service..

The agencies according to the marketing principles are supposed to adopt a system in the lace of allied facilities available.

 10. 11.

“ Sulabh Sauchalaya is a low cost scheme found environment friendly and so suitable for small towns and villages”. Do you agree? Discuss.

Question 2
 11. 12. Sulabh Shauchalaya

Project is based on idea of converting dry latrines into water-seal ones is a low-cost and environment friendly and therefore suitable for developing and poor countries.

The merits of the projects are :

Odorless as the gases produced are absorbed in the soil.

Found easy to construct and even less expensive

It requires a small space

Can be constructed in different soil conditions and under

varying depths of sub-soil water table.

Requires little water to flush out the human excreta.

The human excreta collected in the pit is transformed into organic manure.

 12. 13. Sulabh Shauchalaya - Issues

The service and maintenance needs an intensive care.

In Indian conditions, majority of persons lack civic sense.

In the face of users behavior that we witness at all the sanitation centers its important that we supply adequate water and a care taker to watch and serve.

There is a policy of ‘ pay and use ‘ at the public sanitation centers but the users instead of availing the same prefer to go out and pollute the environment. They do not like to pay a very nominal charge for this purpose.

 15. 16. Promotion Sanitation

The concerned agencies use the services of leading professionals and advertise the slogans , messages and succeed in making the appeals positive.

Since the emphasis is on less receptive segment of the

society, it is essential to have an in-depth knowledge of the target prospect.

The advertisers are supposed to study the prospects and to compose messages, design advertisement layouts accordingly to make advertisement more effective.
