  1. 1. REPORTED SPEECH <ul><li>It is an indirect way of talking or it is also called Indirect Speech. </li></ul><ul><li>We use it when we want to repeat what someone else says or said </li></ul>

REPORTED SPEECH <ul><li>When the reported verb (say or tell) is in present or future, the sentence stays in the same tense. </li></ul><ul><li>Examples: </li></ul><ul><li>“ I am sick” </li></ul><ul><li>He says he is sick </li></ul><ul><li>“ I am sick” </li></ul><ul><li>He will say he is sick </li></ul>

REPORTED SPEECH <ul><li>When the reported verb is in past, there are many changes in the tense according to the tense given in the sentences. </li></ul><ul><li>Becomes </li></ul><ul><li>Present “ past </li></ul><ul><li>Present continuous “ past continuous </li></ul><ul><li>past “ past perfect </li></ul><ul><li>Present perfect “ past perfect </li></ul><ul><li>will/can/may “ would/could/might </li></ul><ul><li>Am/is/are going to “ was/were going to </li></ul><ul><li>Past continuous “ past perfect continuous </li></ul><ul><li>Must “ had to </li></ul><ul><li>*Would, Could, Might and past perfect remains the same. </li></ul>
