This week we discuss the launch of the Google+Project and what it means to business. We highlighted the initial key features including Circles, Huddles, Instant Uploads and Sparks. We also overviewed the Google Analytics social plug in and the new reports available in Google Webmaster Tools to manage the effectiveness of the +one button.

  • When we launched Jolt&Bolt on June 16th we discussed the launch of Google+1 and the ability to integrate the button into websites similar to a facebook like button. We also discussed the importance of building a social community to add value to the Google +1 button. The facebook and Bing integration has the potential for search impact because of our community in facebook but how would google build social community to support the value of the Google +button? Since our June 16 session, as we mentioned, Google has been slowly releasing all the pieces of Google +1. Which is now refereed to as the Google+ Project. Google may have finally found a solid platform in the social arena, if they can build community. Today we are going to walk through what the google plus project looks like and most importantly discuss why this is relevant to business. Even to B2B, Industry and manufacturing.
  • First let’s talk about why this is relevant to your businesses. Consumer oriented businesses are already understanding the power of social and the impact it has on brand, building awareness and driving revenue. However more traditional business to business companies especially manufacturing and industry have been many of the one to be late adopters, not relevant to their conversation. And they weren’t always wrong. Now B2B is understanding the importance of the internet and the value of search and driving quality traffic yet are still pushing back hard on social. But now search and social are merging and the lines are blurred, it will not be a separate conversation for very long. As facebook and bing results start to gain traction and if Google gains traction with the Plus Project then social will become VERY important to ANY BUSINESS who wants to be successful on the web.
  • The initial “Key Features” of Google+Project include Circles, Instant Uploads, Hangouts, Huddle, Sparks. What is interesting is the phrasing Google used to announce this “initial key features” The Google+Project is still in limited access. I applied to participate was told they were maxed out and would email me as soon as it was available. I am going to quickly overview the features just so you understand what is coming.Circles: According to Google: You share different things with different people. So sharing the right stuff with the right people shouldn’t be a hassle. Circles makes it easy to put your friends from Saturday night in one circle, your parents in another, and your boss in a circle by himself - just like real life. The advantage here over facebook is easier simpler groups. If you bike and are in a book club you may not want to share information with your bike friends about your most recent book.Hangouts: Basically group video chatting: With Hangouts, the unplanned meet-up comes to the web for the first time. Let specific buddies (or entire circles) know you’re hanging out and then see who drops by for a face-to-face-to-face chat. Until teleportation arrives, it’s the next best thing.Instant Uploads: An easier way to share photos. My understanding is this is more compatible with Android phones right now but again expect to see that evolve. According to: Taking photos is fun. Sharing photos is fun. Getting photos off your phone is pretty much the opposite of fun. With Instant Upload, your photos and videos upload themselves automatically, to a private album on Google+. All you have to do is decide who to share them with.Huddle: Texting on a whole new level but integrates with your social community on Google. According to Google: Texting is great, but not when you’re trying to get six different people to decide on a movie. Huddle turns all those different conversations into one simple group chat, so everyone gets on the same page all at once. Your thumbs will thank you.Sparks: Create your own personal online magazine with information you are interested in. It reminds me of the Zite App. According to Google: Taking photos is fun. Sharing photos is fun. Getting photos off your phone is pretty much the opposite of fun. With Instant Upload, your photos and videos upload themselves automatically, to a private album on Google+. All you have to do is decide who to share them with.You: When you have access to the Google+Project your google tool bar will have the word You on the far left side which will grant YOU access to your social community.
  • Last week I quickly reviewed what had been released on Google Analytics and social reporting. More information is now out so I want to share that with and clarify some of what was said last week. Some of what I reported last week as available in Google Analytics wasn’t completely accurate. Social reporting will now be measured in both Google Webmaster Tools and in Google Analytics. Webmaster tools will focus on the impact of +1 specifically. Google Analytics will report on the impact of all social platforms.
  • The Search Impact report is managed through Google webmaster Tools and gives you an idea of how +1‘s affect your organic search traffic. You can find out if your clickthrough rate changes when personalized recommendations help your content stand out. Do this by comparing clicks and impressions on search results with and without +1 annotations. We’ll only show statistics on clickthrough rate changes when you have enough impressions for a meaningful comparison.
  • The Google Plus Activity Report is managed through Google Webmaster Tools and indicates the number of times your pages have been +1’d
  • The Audience report also managed through Google Webmaster Tools shows you aggregate geographic and demographic information about the Google users who’ve +1’d your pages. To protect privacy, we’ll only show audience information when a significant number of users have +1’d pages from your site.
  • Google Analytics Social Plug in will help you measure all of your social platforms that you have integrated on your website.
  • This is an interesting play by Bing and potentially a very smart one. Google has choosen to pull out of China and now Bing announces a partnership with Baidu. Not a lot is being said yet but it early reports are that for english language seaches there will be a section of results powered by Bing. According to Baidu there are as many as 10 million searches each day that are performed in English. And the Chinese Internet market has grown by double digit percentages over the past five years. And, Google does still enjoy an 11% marketshare despite it’s struggles there.
  • While theGoogle+Project is just rolling out with limited access. It is now time for ALL businesses – including B2B, industry and even manufacturing to take a serious look at Social. It is important to the success of all businesses online. HOWEVER, do not panic. You don’t need to rush out today and sign up for every social platform out there. But what you do need to to do is start considering a strategy on how you will START to incorporate it moving forward.For so many years our ability to reach beyond our borders was costly an difficult. With the advent of the internet it has become easier and even now it is becoming more cost effective and simpler to do. This partnership with Bing is a step in that direction. So as you plan for 2012 consider markets that you haven’t before.
