Thesevariations of football are known as football codes.
  2. 2.  Various forms of football can be identified in history, oftenas popular peasant games. Contemporary codes of footballcan be traced back to the codification of these games atEnglish public schools in the eighteenth and nineteenthcentury.[2][3] The influence and power of theBritishEmpire allowed these rules of football to spread to areas ofBritish influence outside of the directly controlledEmpire,[4] though by the end of the nineteenth century, distinct regional codes were already developing: GaelicFootball, for example, deliberately incorporated the rules oflocal traditional football games in order to maintain theirheritage.[5] In 1888, The Football League was founded inEngland, becoming the first of many professional footballcompetitions.
