The Reclaiming of Words and Ideas

Reappropriation was used for social justice movements before hipsters thought that being ironic was cool. Whether it is the reclaiming of a racial epiphet that was once used to disparage a community, or changing the meaning of an oppressive word to one that provides sociopolitical empowerment, it's an important process that activists use to impact society. Though, how does one use reappropriated ideas, symbols, or words to create real-world change? Is it actually effective? Simon Tam, founder of Asian American band The Slants, will lead you through an interactive workshop with stories and discussion about how you can use reappropriation to change your world.
