New Diagnostic Equipment for Pediatric Cardiology Patients

  1. 1.                        For Immediate Release New Diagnostic Equipment for Pediatric Cardiology Patients May 13, 2010, Winnipeg – Variety, the Children’s Charity of Manitoba and the Variety Children’s Heart Centre at Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg are excited to celebrate the arrival and installation of a new Pediatric Exercise Physiology Laboratory. The new lab consists of a treadmill and specialized cardiac monitoring equipment, which allows the care team to see how patients' hearts respond to various degrees of physical stress. The new equipment replaces an outdated system, more than 20 years old. “We’re thrilled to have this new equipment at HSC,” said Dr. Reeni Soni, Section Head, Variety Children’s Heart Centre. “It will help us identify exercise-induced heart rhythm (electrical) conditions that can be potentially fatal if not diagnosed and treated. It also enables us to follow how well children who had complex cardiac surgeries are doing from a heart-function perspective.” Variety has supported pediatric cardiology at HSC for more than 31 years and has donated funds in excess of $1 million. Contributions from corporate and individual donors and Variety funds made the purchase of this equipment possible. The Variety Children’s Heart Centre is the Pediatric Cardiology department at HSC, an operating division of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. The Centre serves approximately 4,000 children across Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, Nunavut and Eastern Saskatchewan each year. -30- For more information, please contact: Diane Crowley Communications Coordinator, Variety Office – 204.982.1052 Mobile – 204.782.9660 Kat Washchyshyn Director, Communications, HSC Office – 204.787.7934 Mobile – 204.918.3228
