  13. 13. <ul><li>KR has a project development plan to guide the way forward with regard to implementation of the expansion and modernization of the commuter rail transport services for Nairobi. </li></ul><ul><li>This commenced in April 2009 and the plans are complete. </li></ul><ul><li>The next step is to move to implementation. </li></ul>
  14. 14. <ul><li>The project will be implemented in three phases: </li></ul><ul><li>Phase 1 (the core system) considered financially viable will cover the following routes: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Nairobi – JKIA </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Nairobi – Embakasi Village </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Nairobi – Ruiru, and </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Nairobi – Kikuyu </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Phase 2 will extend rail commuter services to Thika, Limuru and Lukenya/Kitengela </li></ul>

  19. 19. <ul><li>Justification: </li></ul><ul><li>Provide alternative faster means of passenger transport to the Airport </li></ul><ul><li>Presently it takes 90 minutes on average to travel from CBD to Airport </li></ul><ul><li>Stakeholders including KQ, KAA and KCAA support KR initiative </li></ul>

  21. 22. <ul><li>Project activities: </li></ul><ul><li>Construct a 6.5 Km branch line from Embakasi Station </li></ul><ul><li>Upgrade the track between Nairobi Railway Station and Embakasi Station </li></ul><ul><li>Construct new passenger platforms and canopies at Makadara, Imara Daima and JKIA </li></ul><ul><li>Construct new car parks at JKIA and Makadara Stations </li></ul><ul><li>Construct a new station building at JKIA </li></ul>
  22. 23. <ul><li>Progress made </li></ul><ul><li>Detailed design of the proposed branch line from Embakasi Station to the edge of Mombasa Highway completed </li></ul><ul><li>Detailed design of stations, platforms and parking areas completed </li></ul><ul><li>Inspection of track and rolling stock for intended rehabilitation completed </li></ul><ul><li>KR through MoT requested GoK for funding </li></ul><ul><li>Implementation will begin in June 2010 to be complete by December 2010 </li></ul>
  23. 26. <ul><li>To proceed to implementation a number of issues need to be progressed by NCC: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Discourage informal settlements within the railway reserve; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Control of waste disposal within the railway reserve </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The Matatu park at Nairobi Railway station needs to be reorganised for easy flow of traffic; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Expeditious development approvals of plans; </li></ul></ul>
