Thriller Planning

 1. 1. Thriller Planning – (Title) Cat and Vickii
 2. 2. Characters

Jesse – (meaning a woman of wealth) is a 18 years old and has just lost her a member of her family. She lives with her partner and because of this she is wealthy and this can be seen from the way she dresses and the car she drives. She has blonde hair and blue eyes.

Logan – (meaning hollow) is 25 years old and was in a relationship with Jesse 2 years ago. He is now seeking revenge because Jesse has fallen in love with another man. He has brown hair and is 5ft 10”. You can see that he doesn’t care about his appearance as his hair is messy and clothes are creases.

Logan’s Friend - He is also 25 years old and is helping Edward seek revenge on Jesse. He has seen his friend deteriorate and wants to help him get his life back on track. He wears mostly black clothes and is quite smart.

 3. 3. Costume

When showing what type of person a character is, the costume is very important. Jesse will be dressed in trousers with and shirt and long coat, high heels, simple make up and red nail varnish, she will also have some gloves to wear. In the flashback scenes she will wear variations of the same outfit, so a different shirt and a different pair of shoes. Logan will be dressed scruffily and untidily, this is to show that he doesn’t care about his appearance. He will wear dirty jeans, a dark coloured polo shirt, a hoodie and a pair of boots. He will wear the same thing in all the flashback scenes. Where as Logan’s friend will be dresses smartly, all in black, this shows that he has control over his life unlike Logan.

 4. 4. Location

Swainsthorpe Churchyard - The surrounding areas of the church connote mystery, darkness, and suspense because of the sense of death and loneliness.

Riverside Car Park - The car park is in a city location but still gives a feeling of isolation and it is a generic location.

Lift - In the lift it is confined and dirty, which creates claustrophobia and fear because there is no way out if something happens.

Escalator - There is a risk of falling and the constant reality of moving connotes a sense of being followed or being watched. If it is not possible to film on an escalator we will try and film on a stair case, this is idea is similar to the one that can be seen in The Third Man when Holly is on the stairs talking to the Austrian Man.

 5. 5. Plot

Logan is seeking revenge over a past partner, Jesse, and follows her around in daily life. It all ends up in a graveyard, where she is mourning a lost relative, and is then abducted by Logan and his friend.

 6. 6. Type of Thriller Who it appeals to

This thriller will be a physiological thriller, it consists of a series of flash backs which helps to link the ideas altogether. This sort of narrative can be seen in the film Momento.

 7. 7. Sound

Because there will be no dialogue apart from Jesse answering the phone, we will use some background music to build the tension and create suspense, this is non-diagetic sound as it will be added afterwards. Other sounds that will feature in the openings are a mobile phone ringing, and a car engine, these are all diagetic sounds as they are from the scene rather than being added after the shoot.

 8. 8. Lighting

The main scene, in the graveyard, is shot at dusk when the sun is setting; this is because it gives more atmosphere to the scene and a sense of mystery and the unknown. It is also chiaroscuro lighting which is generic to a thriller. In the flashback scenes, the lighting is normal daylight. This gives a sense of normality even though Jesse is still being followed by Logan. The car headlights are another generic signifier especially when the car is driving down a wet road in the dark.

 9. 9. Objects and Props

The main object we will use is important in the opening sequence because it links all of the scenes together. Jesses mobile phone is used in all of the scenes including the flashbacks. The gloves are another important part because they are part of the intertextual reference. The flowers Jesse will lay on the grave are red roses, this connotes passion and love but it also signifies the oncoming danger, which reflects the relationship she had with Logan. Finally, the car we will use, a Lotus Elan, is a prop that shows the type of person that Jesse is and the amount of money she has from her new relationship.

 10. 10. Sequence of Events

Jesse in car putting on gloves.

She walks into the graveyard.

Lays flowers on the grave of her deceased relative.

Phone rings, the call is from an unknown number, Logan is hiding in the background calling from his phone.

Flashback 1 – Jesse is sitting in a park and declines the unknown phone call, Logan is in the background.

Flashback 2 – Jesse is on an escalator and declines the unknown phone call again; Logan is in the background but even closer than before.

Flashback 3 – Jesse is in a lift going down and declines another unknown call; Logan is in the other lift going up.

Back in the church yard, Jesse answers her phone, while walking back to her car, there is no answer.

Logan is sitting inside the car and Logan’s friend is following behind Jesse.

Logan rolls down the window.

She turns around to run but runs straight into Logan’s friend and they struggle.

The screen blacks out.

Car drives away and the graveyard is empty.
