  5. 5. Understanding the Caste Notion! "There can, under these conditions, be nofreedom that is worthwhile unless the mind istrained to use its freedom. (Given this fact) the rightof man to education becomes fundamental to hisfreedom. Deprive a man of knowledge and youwill make him inevitably the slave of those morefortunate than himself.... deprivation ofknowledge is a denial of the power to use libertyfor great ends. An ignorant man may be free....(But) he cannot employ his freedom so as to givehim assurance of happiness." --Pg-39 Vol -III Probe must be a continuous process! 5
  6. 6. Understanding the Caste Notion! Education every one must have. Means of defence everyone must have. These are the paramount requirements ofevery man for his self-preservation. How can the fact thathis neighbour is educated and armed, help a man who isuneducated and disarmed. The whole theory is absurd. These are the questions, which the defenders ofChaturvarnya do not seem to be troubled about. But theyare very pertinent questions. …On account of theChaturvarnya they could receive no education. They couldnot think out or know the way to their salvation. They werecondemned to be lowly and not knowing the way of escapeand not having the means of escape, they becamereconciled to eternal servitude, which they accepted astheir inescapable fate. --Pg-70, Vol-III Probe must be a continuous process! 6
  7. 7. Understanding the Caste Notion! Although this may be true yet it cannot bedifficult to separate the essential and fundamentalfeatures of caste from its non-essential andsuperficial features. An easy way to ascertain thisis to ask, „What are the matters for which a personis liable to be excluded from caste‟. --Pg-142 Probe must be a continuous process! 7

At all other times the country sufferedfrom defeat and darkness. To put it differently the object was to elevate andennoble every Brahmin, however mean and worthless he maybe, to the high status occupied by some of them on account of thevirtue. It was an attempt to ennoble the whole of the BrahminCommunity without exception. That this was the object ofBrahmanism is clear from Manus ordinances. Manu knew thatmaking Varna hereditary, the most ignorant Brahmin will beelevated to the status occupied by the most learned Brahmin. He feared that the former may not be respected as much as themost learned, which was the object of this attempt at theennoblement of the whole class of Brahmins.
