SSL Certificates: SSL Certificates from Brands like Thawte, Comodo and Verisign

 1. 1. Why do we need SSL? Today's buzzword is...” Internet & Business “ The e-commerce business is all about making money and then finding ways to make more money. Of course, it's hard to make (more) money, when consumers don't feel safe executing a transaction on your Web site. That's where SSL (Secure Socket Layer) comes into play. Understanding how SSL affects e-commerce business can also potentially help you to unlock (more) money from your custom
 2. 2. SSL is all about encryption. SSL encrypts data, like credit cards numbers (as well other personally identifiable information), which prevents the "bad guys" from stealing your information for malicious intent. You know that you're on an SSL protected page when the address begins with "https" and there is a padlock icon at the bottom of the page (and in the case of Mozilla Firefox in the address bar as well). What is SSL?
 3. 3.

An SSL-encrypted connection is established via the SSL handshake process, which transpires within seconds transparently to the end user. When accessing an SSL-secured Web site area, the visitors browser requests a secure session from the Web server.

The server responds by sending the visitor ’ s browser its server certificate.

The browser verifies that the server ’ s certificate is valid, is being used by the Web site for which it has been issued, and has been issued by a Certificate Authority that the browser trusts.

If the certificate is validated, the browser generates a one-time session key and encrypts it with the server ’ s public key.

The visitor ’ s browser sends the encrypted session key to the server so that both server and browser have a copy.

The server decrypts the session key using its private key. The SSL handshake process is complete, and an SSL connection has been established.

A padlock icon appears in the browser ’ s status bar, indicating that secure session is under way.

How does SSL work?
 4. 4. SSL saves your website from Phishing & Pharming and Brings TURST CA = Certifying Authority such as VeriSign

No lock icon: Because CA ’ s usually won ’ t issue a certificate to fraudulent phishing or pharming sites, such sites usually do not use SSL encryption. Internet users, therefore, are alerted by the absence of a padlock icon in their browsers status bar.

Name mismatch error: A pharming site could try to use a certificate issued by a CA for a domain owned by the attacker, but the user ’ s browser will warn the user that the visited URL does not match the certificate presented by the fake Web server.

Untrusted CA: A pharming site might attempt to use a certificate issued by an untrusted CA. In this case, the user ’ s browser will generate the following warning: the security certificate was issued by a company you have not chosen to trust

 5. 5. Who needs SSL certificate?

SSL should be used by any organization wishing to:

Secure online credit card transactions

Secure online system logins, web forms, web mail, control panels or protected areas of web sites

Secure the transfer of files over https and FTP services such as web site owners updating new pages to their web sites

Secure the connection between an email client such as Microsoft Outlook and an email server such as Microsoft Exchange

Secure intranet based traffic such as intranets, extranets and database connections

Companies connected thru VPN to multi-locations
