  1. 1. Name your Challenge! Whether it’s a 10K run, a half marathon, walking in Derbyshire, trekking through Morocco, or completing a fun run ... we have a challenge for you! Join Shine Chair, Richard Astle, on a remarkable year and help transform the lives of everyone living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

The Chairman’s Challenge Richard Astle, Chairman of Shine, is embarking on a year of challenges to mark his 10 anniversary as Chair of this Peterborough-based charity. th Richard is hoping to raise £25,000 to fund a new Health and Wellbeing Centre for people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. As the Managing Director of Athene Communications, Richard has set himself these challenges: three 10K runs, five half marathons and a trek across the Sahara Desert! This is a huge undertaking and Richard would appreciate your support through sponsorship, or maybe you could challenge yourself to run or trek with him?   3. 3. CH ALL CO MP ENGE LET Nick Beer 10K, Llandudno, Wales E! Challenge One 9.2.2014 Race details: ENTRY ON THE DAY AVAILABLE The Nick Beer 10K is a memorial race held in Llandudno, Wales. This will be the first event in Richard’s calendar and it would be great to see you there at the beginning of this monumental year of challenges. Deadline for entry is 3.2.2014

Challenge Two Larne 1/2 Marathon, Larne, Northern Ireland 22.3.2014 Race details: Taking in the beautiful scenery of Larne, Northern Ireland, this is the second Chairman’s Challenge which will see the race distance increase to a 13.1 mile halfmarathon. ENTRY ON THE DAY AVAILABLE WALKING OPTION AVAILABLE TEAM RELAY AVAILABLE As well as the full run option, Larne offers both a team relay and walking option - so there’s a way for everyone to get involved!

Challenge Three Sheffield 1/2 Marathon, Sheffield 6.4.2014 Race details: FUN RUN OPTION AVAILABLE The Sheffield half-marathon will see Richard return to his home town with friends and family present to cheer him along. If the half-marathon distance is too far, why not try the fun run? Every step makes a difference to the essential work of Shine. Deadline for entry: 25.3.2014

Challenge Four Leeds 1/2 Marathon, Leeds 11.5.2014 Race details: FUN RUN OPTION AVAILABLE Shine Patron and BBC pundit, Danny Mills, will be joining Richard for this popular run right through the centre of Leeds. If the 13.1 mile option is a bit far for you, why not sign up for the fun run? Deadline for race entry: 9.5.2014

Challenge Five World Cup 10K, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil July 2014 Race details: INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE Richard will be joined by Shine Patron and BBC pundit, Danny Mills, on this 10K run with a World Cup samba vibe! If you’re in Brazil at the time of the event, get in touch and we can arrange for you to run this race with Richard, Danny and all the fans that join in to truly make this event Shine! Challenge Six Dales Destroyer, 40 mile hike, Derbyshire 16.8.2014 TEAM RELAY AVAILABLE Hike details: The Dales Destroyer is better known as the Limestone Way, a 40 mile walk across Derbyshire from Castleton to Tissington taking in many of the best known and most beautiful parts of the Peak District dales. Our aim is to complete the walk in the course of one day, starting at 7am and finishing by 9pm on 16 August 2014. There are three ways to be involved: 1. Join me and attempt to complete the whole walk in one day. 2. Join me at various stages of the walk, completing sections of the challenge according to your own plan. 3. Form a team and compete against other teams to see who can conquer the Dales Destroyer first! - PRIZES FOR THE FIRST THREE TEAMS HOME!   9. 9. Challenge Seven Great North Run, Gateshead 7.9.2014 Race details: FUN RUN OPTION AVAILABLE Quite simply the world’s greatest halfmarathon event! Come and join Richard in experiencing a very special event, either as a halfmarathon or fun-runner, and witness one of the greatest spectacles in the British sports calendar.
  10. 10. Challenge Eight Perkins Great Eastern Run, Peterborough 19.10.2014 Race details: FUN RUN OPTION AVAILABLE One of the fastest growing runs in the UK with more competitors than ever in 2013! Join Richard in Peterborough, the city in which he has worked for many years, and experience this flat, fast run! If the 13.1 miles sounds daunting, why not join Shine’s Benny Bear in the Fun Run?

Challenge Nine Trek Morocco 31.10.2014 INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE Trek details: Here is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to trek through the deserts of Morocco, and experience the beauty, history and hospitality of this ancient nation. The ten-day trek will be a great challenge to really test your fitness as you fundraise significant amounts towards the work of Shine. To find out more please visit:

Challenge Ten Santa Dash, London December 2014 Race details: End this amazing year of challenges with festive cheer and join us for the Santa Dash, a fun run with every single person dressed as Santa Claus!   13. 13. How will we use the money you fundraise? Shine’s new Health and Wellbeing Centre ... By providing the first ever specialised Centre of its type in England, Shine will provide a vital focus for supporting the health and wellbeing needs of our members with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. They will be able to access: • • • • • • • • • • • • Individual ‘whole person’ health appointments with qualified Shine staff Occupational therapy assessments and advice Nurse consultations for specific issues Health courses focusing on a specific area of health New parent sessions for parents with disabled newborns Parent support and networking sessions Wheelchair advice Training courses in wheelchair skills Support in communicating with GPs and consultants Remote access to health professionals through Skype Independent living skills in an accessible training kitchen facility Equipment and aids to try. The Centre’s outreach services will offer: • • • • • • Telephone, e-mail and Skype access for advice A range of information resources on all aspects of spina bifida and hydrocephalus Advice for professionals Training courses and health events Peer support groups Healthy Living initiatives
