2. Virtualization and its Types
Virtualization is a term that refers to the abstraction of computer
resources
Types of virtualization:
• Application Virtualization
• Sever Virtualization
• Platform Virtualization
• Network Virtualization
• Memory Virtualization
• Desktop Virtualization
3. Application Virtualization
• Application virtualization describes software technologies that
improve portability, manageability and compatibility of
applications by encapsulating them from the underlying
operating system on which they are executed.
• A fully virtualized application is not installed in the traditional
sense, although it is still executed as if it is.
• The application is fooled at runtime into believing that it is
directly interfacing with the original operating system and all the
resources managed by it, when in reality it is not.
• The Operating System components that surround an
application (e.g. registry, file system etc.) are virtualized, not the
application itself.
4. Benefits
• Allows applications to run in environments that do not suit the
native application (e.g. Wine allows Microsoft Windows
applications to run on Linux).
• May protect the operating system and other applications from
poorly written or buggy code.
• Uses fewer resources than a separate virtual machine.
• Run applications that are not written correctly.
• Run incompatible applications side-by-side, at the same time
and with minimal regression testing against one another.
• Maintain a standard configuration in the underlying operating
system across multiple computers in an organization, regardless
of the applications being used, thereby keeping costs down.
5. Server Virtualization
Server virtualization is the masking of server resources,
including the number and identity of individual physical
servers, processors, and operating systems, from server
users.
The server administrator uses a software application to divide
one physical server into multiple isolated virtual environments.
The virtual environments are sometimes called virtual private
servers, but they are also known as guests, instances,
containers or emulations.
6. Benefits
• Lower number of physical servers - reduce hardware
maintenance costs because of a lower number of physical
servers.
• By implementing a server consolidation strategy, increase the
space utilization efficiency in data center.
• By having each application within its own virtual server
prevent one application from impacting another application
when upgrades or changes are made.
• Develop a standard virtual server build that can be easily
duplicated which will speed up server deployment.
• Deploy multiple operating system technologies on a single
hardware platform (i.e. Windows Server 2003, Linux,
Windows 2000, etc).
7. Hyper-V
Microsoft Hyper-V, codenamed Viridian, formerly known as
Windows Server Virtualization, is a hypervisor-based
virtualization system for x86-64 systems. A beta version of
Hyper-V was shipped with certain x64 editions of Windows
Server 2008, and the finalized version (automatically updated
through Windows Update) was released on 26 June 2008.
A free stand-alone version of Hyper-V, called "Microsoft Hyper-V
Server 2008" was released on October 1, 2008, which is a
variant of Windows Server 2008 "Core" that includes full Hyper-V
functionality; other Windows 2008 Server Roles are disabled,
and there are limited Windows Services.
