  2. 2. • Slavery existed since ancient times • Slaves were bought from African rulers and traders • Around 11 million slaves reached America • Some African rulers resisted, but they were not able to stop the slave trade
  3. 3. • Merchants brought goods to Africa to trade for slaves • Slaves were transported to the West Indies where they were traded for goods like sugar, tobacco and molasses • These goods were then shipped to Europe
  4. 4. • Caused the decline of some African states and the rise of others (some small states disappeared all together) • Rulers of powerful new states waged war against other Africans to gain control of the slave trade in their region • Decreased population
