5th Grade
History. The student understands the causes and effects of
European colonization in the United States beginning in 1565,
the founding of St. Augustine. The student is expected to:
(B) describe the accomplishments of significant individuals
during the colonial period, including William Bradford, Anne
Hutchinson, William Penn, John Smith, John Wise, and Roger
Williams.
3. • Pocahontas was born in about 1595
• Her original name was “Amonute”
• She went by Pocahontas which meant “playful
one”
• She was from the Powhatan Chiefdom and the
daughter of the chief.
4. Meeting of John Smith
• John Smith was captured by Chief Powhatan’s
brother, Opechancanough.
• John Smith was taken to Chief Powhatan and
he was to be executed.
• John Smith was told to put his head down on
a rock to be clubbed.
5. Pocahontas Steps In
• Just as John Smith was about to be executed,
Pocahontas stepped in and laid her head on
his, stopping the execution.
• Some believe that John Smith was not really
going to be executed, that it was just an
‘adoption ceremony.’
• John Smith was excepted into the tribe and
allowed to leave.
6. Return to Jamestown
• Once John Smith returned to Jamestown, Chief
Powhatan would send food to the starving
English.
• Pocahontas would usually bring the food because
she was a sign of peace to the English.
• Pocahontas was sometimes seen playing with the
young English, living up to her name “playful
one”
7. Trouble Brewing
• Over time, relations between the Powhatans and
the English deteriorated, but Pocahontas’s did
not.
• At times, the Powhatans were trading corn for
trinkets that the English would bring.
• The English were demanding more food, but the
Powhatans could not give them any due to a
draught.
8. Trouble…
• The English started burning down Powhatan
tribes in order to get more food.
• Pocahontas went and warned John Smith that
her father was planning on killing him.
• She never saw him in Virginia again.
9. Kidnapping
• In 1613, Captain Samuel Argall decided he would
kidnap Pocahontas in hopes of making the
relationship between the English and Powhatans
• After her capture, she was taken to Jamestown
• While captured, Pocahontas learned the English’s
customs and religion
10. Time in Jamestown
• Still in Jamestown, she met a man named John
Rolfe and fell in love
• In 1614 Pocahontas and John Rolfe got
married and she changed her name to
Rebecca.
• In 1616 Pocahontas ran into John Smith again.
11. Seeing John Smith Again
• Pocahontas was angry at John Smith for the
way they treated his father.
• She reminded John Smith how her people
took him in and gave them food.
12. The Ending Day
• Pocahontas fell ill traveling from England back
to Jamestown.
• She died in the town of Gravesend at around
the age of 21 on March 21, 1617.
• She was buried at St. George’s Church.
