  3. 3. What We Offer <ul><li>Basic Literacy tutoring (reading and writing) </li></ul><ul><li>English as a Second Language tutoring (reading, writing, and speaking) </li></ul><ul><li>Independent computer-assisted learning in our Language Lab </li></ul><ul><li>Conversation classes </li></ul>

How It Works <ul><li>We train volunteers to tutor one-on-one or with small groups of students who live or work in Montgomery County. </li></ul><ul><li>We provide all books at no charge to tutor or student. </li></ul><ul><li>We provide ongoing support for the most positive volunteer experience. </li></ul>

Volunteer Tutor Expectations <ul><li>As a Literacy Council Volunteer Tutor, you will: </li></ul><ul><li>Meet with your student(s) two hours per week; </li></ul><ul><li>Enjoy flexible volunteering by setting your own schedule and tutoring location to meet with your student(s); </li></ul><ul><li>Make a direct impact on your community while gaining new skills for yourself! </li></ul><ul><li>No Teaching Experience? </li></ul><ul><li>Prospective tutors need NO prior experience in education. </li></ul><ul><li>You need only to be fluent in English yourself and have the desire to pass those skills along to another person. </li></ul><ul><li>We kindly request a one-year minimum commitment. </li></ul>

What Kind of Person Volunteers for the Literacy Council? <ul><li>Our volunteers come from many different walks of life and include </li></ul><ul><li>students, retirees, homemakers, and full- and part-time workers. </li></ul><ul><li>Our volunteers have included doctors, attorneys, scientists, </li></ul><ul><li>construction workers, librarians, teachers, musicians, engineers, </li></ul><ul><li>mathematicians, artists, photographers, bankers, journalists and </li></ul><ul><li>speech pathologists. </li></ul><ul><li>Join our talented volunteer community today! </li></ul>

Getting Started <ul><li>Start by attending our free orientation to learn about the LCMC and how you can help. </li></ul><ul><li>Sign up for a tutor-training workshop* which takes place over two Saturdays. </li></ul><ul><li>Receive a certificate upon completion of your training. </li></ul><ul><li>Meet your student and begin making a difference! </li></ul><ul><li>* $25 workshop registration fee </li></ul>

Visit our in-house library to borrow teaching materials or we’ll send them to your closest library for you to pick up. </li></ul><ul><li>Need a place to tutor?
