• (end of slide) “like email” has been said a lot… to be more specific, the wave system will have all the functionality and features that email systems have, but it will have many more advanced features on top! Lets take a look at some of those features
  • Google Wave

    1. 1. GOOGLE WAVE

A revolutionary system that will change the way the world communicates and collaborates!

    2. 2. WHAT IS GOOGLE WAVE?

A Communication and Collaboration object

Email-type “conversations” (sometimes called “waves”)

Instant messaging

Share photos and other rich media types

Collaborative editing functionality like Wiki sites

Extension APIs that let you build collaborative applications within the “waves” (example – collaborative games)

External APIs that allow integration with other communication systems such as Twitter

User clients: rich clients running in a browser or applications running on a mobile device

    3. 3. OPEN-SOURCED PROTOCOL

Like e-mail, Wave will be an open protocol

The algorithms and protocols have been designed to support federation, which means:

Any organization can build its own wave system

Give accounts to users (even in competition with Google)

Users can share waves with each other across these systems

Functionality of the waves will remain the same across these systems

    4. 4. FEATURES

Entire “conversation” between users is an object hosted on a server, instead of messages being sent back and forth through e-mail

Benefit: easier to keep track of structure

Instant messaging within the wave conversation can be done live , character-by-character

Benefit: save a lot of time, which is otherwise spent watching the screen display “… is typing” in current instant messaging services

A new user added to a conversation can play back the wave threads and see the entire sequential history of the conversation

Benefit: makes collaboration easier, more convenient and more efficient

    5. 5. FEATURES continued

Attachments

Drag-and-drop attachments from hard drive into the wave – users included in the wave can see the thumbnails instantly, even before the whole file has been uploaded (another example of live concurrency)

Option to extract only the attachments from a wave conversation lets you share the attachments (like photos) with a wider user-base, without sharing the other content that went along with the original wave conversation

- Benefit: convenience!

    6. 6. FEATURES continued

Aggregate all your conversations on the web into the wave client

Embed waves into your blogs or social networking pages

Continue conversations (/waves) through either the wave client or the embedded wave

Live concurrency with the embedded waves as well!

    7. 7. FEATURES continued

Editing conversations, documents or attachments

Multiple users can edit simultaneously

Live concurrency

Playback mode

Documents ( collaboration ) and conversation threads (email-type communication ) can be part of the same wave

Changes made by users will be highlighted

Playback – browse to any point in the history of the wave

- additional options like playback the changes made by a particular user

Option to extract the document out of the wave, removing the conversation threads

Rich documents, spreadsheets, presentation documents

    8. 8. FEATURES continued

Organization

The usual: folders, saved searches, tags

Links to waves – drag a wave from the inbox and drop into the new wave!

Live concurrency in search results!

    9. 9. CLIENT-SIDE EXTENSIONS (GADGETS)

Spelly : an advanced spell-checker that takes the context of a misspelled word into account, and matches it up against an enormous language model

Linky : automatically detects links typed in a wave and makes them blue and underlined

Detects if the link is to a video, and gives the option of embedding the video right there in the wave

Searchy : search the web in a little pop-up window and add links to wave directly from the search results

    10. 10. GADGETS continued

RSVP gadget : keeps real-time track of people’s responses

Maps gadget : insert map of a location by highlighting the name in the wave and clicking on one button!

Live concurrency for all users, even while making changes to the map like zooming, adding markers, etc.

Games : users can play games like Sudoku and chess in a wave

Playback mode to see the progression of the game step-by-step

These were just a few examples. Many more extensions will be developed in the time to come

    11. 11. SERVER-SIDE EXTENSIONS (ROBOTS)

Polly the Pollster : start a ‘poll’ instead of a ‘wave’

Adds a form with entries like Title, Question, Choices

Users can collaborate on making the poll

Poll is distributed to recipients

Results section updated live

Tweety : start a ‘twave’ and sign in to your Twitter account

Integrated with Twitter – follow and update your account through the ‘twave’

    12. 12. ROBOTS continued

Buggy : example of integration with existing workflows

Fast, easy and convenient way to file bugs on Issue-tracker

Assign users to handle bugs through Wave

View and update comments posted on Issue-tracker through Wave, in real-time

Rosy : real-time language translator

In addition to live, character-by-character concurrency between users (A and B, for instance), this robot translates the message from one language (user A) to another (user B)

For now, can work with any pair from a set of 40 languages!

    13. 13. FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

Google Wave is not a complete product yet

Many more widgets, gadgets, extensions, robots and additional functionality will be developed

    14. 14. IMPACT ON GLOBALIZATION

The features and extensions of Google Wave will help global communication and collaboration

Added convenience

Ease of usability

Organizational tools mean fewer mistakes and less chaos

Save valuable time during online communication and collaboration

    15. 15. GOOGLE WAVE

The Future is bright…

The Future is exciting…

The Future is calling out to us…

…

No wait!

… The Future is Waving us over!
