Asian Pacific Islander Program (API) <ul><li>Asian Pacific Islander Program (API) is a mental health program which provides culturally appropriate mental health therapy and case management services to the residents of Fresno County of Asian decent. </li></ul><ul><li>API is primarily funded by Mental Heath Service Act (MHSA) and Medi-cal. </li></ul>

Organizational Structure <ul><li>The staff currently includes: </li></ul><ul><li>a clinical supervisor </li></ul><ul><li>a part-time psychiatrist </li></ul><ul><li>a nurse </li></ul><ul><li>two MSW clinicians </li></ul><ul><li>four community mental health specialists (CMHS) </li></ul><ul><li>one office assistant </li></ul>

Agency’s Practices <ul><li>API service includes assessment </li></ul><ul><li>plan of care (POC) </li></ul><ul><li>individual/group therapy </li></ul><ul><li>individual/group rehabilitation </li></ul><ul><li>family therapy </li></ul><ul><li>linkage/consultation </li></ul><ul><li>medication support and education </li></ul><ul><li>peer support </li></ul><ul><li>group activities </li></ul><ul><li>referral for day treatment services </li></ul><ul><li>Services take place in the office, in the consumers’ homes and at various facilities in the community. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>The goals of mental health services are to assist consumers to achieve their potential, guide them toward their recovery journey, reduce cultural barriers, enhance adaptation and acculturation skills, increase meaningful activities, foster hope and empowerment, engage in supportive relationships, engender personal responsibility, reduce psychiatric symptoms, and develop awareness of the community resources. </li></ul>

Populations at risk <ul><li>Adults age 18 and older </li></ul><ul><li>The majority of API consumers are refugees suffering from multiple war trauma and the complications of acculturating into the American society that is vastly different from their own. </li></ul><ul><li>Chronically mentally ill or co-occurring Southeast Asian adults; which includes Hmong, Cambodian, Laotian, Vietnamese, Mien, and Khmu. </li></ul>

Social Justice <ul><li>API staff represents the wide range of ethnic backgrounds and is culturally attuned to the differences and similarities between groups and the society at large. </li></ul><ul><li>Interpreters are provided accordingly to the needs of the consumers at no charge. </li></ul><ul><li>Cultural competency is an element that is used to decrease the gap of disparity when providing mental health service. This is a holistic approach to increase the healing process and the wellness of consumers. </li></ul><ul><li>Services are provided regardless of their religion, culture, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. </li></ul>

Social Work Values <ul><li>Service: enhance the consumers life with the support of their families and communities </li></ul><ul><li>Social Justice: provide culturally appropriate psychiatric services to consumers </li></ul><ul><li>Dignity and Worth of the consumer: enhance psychiatric symptoms to meet functional level </li></ul><ul><li>Importance of the human being: empower consumer to achieve a sense of well-being and to function among society </li></ul><ul><li>Integrity: assist consumer to understand about their mental health condition </li></ul><ul><li>Competency: quality of service provided by social worker </li></ul>

Human Rights <ul><li>Informed consent: protect consumer by allowing them to receive services through obtaining a written consent for treatment. </li></ul><ul><li>Confidentiality: consumer must be protected for anonymity; and enforce by HIPAA </li></ul><ul><li>Respect for individuals: understanding between consumer and clinician </li></ul><ul><li>API policy and procedure (PP&G): set forth to ensure the quality of services </li></ul>
