A little background… <ul><li>Khan Academy: </li></ul><ul><li>Started by a hedge fund manager who wanted to ‘conveniently’ teach his nephew high school maths. </li></ul><ul><li>Ever since then, its youtube channel has racked up more than 26.5 million views, all due to his clearcut explanations, all done using a tablet and simple software. </li></ul><ul><li>Just head over to and see </li></ul>

Now imagine this… <ul><li>If we could bring the khanacademy experience to the education system in Malaysia, starting with rural CBCs </li></ul><ul><li>The potential gains in saving time and energy that is put into the running and maintenance of the school system could be diverted towards more enterprising projects for students to venture into </li></ul>

Idea Concept <ul><li>To provide high-quality education in the local language through the use of video lectures, open-source software and social media tools, complemented by regular community meetups. </li></ul><ul><li>To approach sustainability, participants in the program will be trained in the spirit of khan academy, but with the intent of creating an online business in information products (using local expertise and know-how) </li></ul>

The innovation <ul><li>Open-source platform that’s being built by KhanAcademy, financed by Google with engineering support funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. </li></ul><ul><li>Leveraging this platform so that it serves the local communities education infrastructure, or even superseding it </li></ul>

Social Impact <ul><li>By removing the constraint of teachers having to repeat/revise things, and the limitation of time spent in the classroom, students have on-demand access to lessons on any topic of their choosing. </li></ul><ul><li>Local communities can get in the habit of teaching without being in on particular location. Knowledge distribution becomes faster/convenient. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Business Viability/Model <ul><li>Hybrid enterprise with blended value creation </li></ul>

Sustainability for the CBC <ul><li>At first, it will lean towards the social element of the project, since training and adoption in the new platform takes time. </li></ul><ul><li>Eventually, with the advent of students/teachers/stakeholders venturing into information-based ventures, a percentage of the revenue goes towards maintaining the program at the CBC </li></ul>

Marketability <ul><li>If we can succeed with the adoption of KhanAcademy’s platform in the rural communities, why not apply it to the urban schooling system? </li></ul><ul><li>Given that students nowadays are proficient users of online video and social media, why not take the education there? </li></ul>
  12. 12. Scalability <ul><li>The platform is online- therefore massively scalable (duh!) </li></ul><ul><li>Imagine if this could be replicated in other developing countries (e.g. Bangladesh, where I’ve volunteered to translate/distribute KhanAcademy videos) where CBCs exist. </li></ul>

Funding/implementation <ul><li>Due to almost zero-cost of implementation at first, I advocate user-generated funding for support. </li></ul><ul><li>However, in order to implement, I would like it if DiGi helped out with expertise on technical aspects like software. Getting on-board stakeholders like students, teachers, university lecturers would be something to think about. </li></ul>
