First of all, I Would like to thank indian oil corporation
limited, Mr. A.B MINZ, Senior OFFICER (who
organized my training schedule) & Er. r.k dubey, T&D
officer with all other staff at the training centre IOCL,
I also thanks the workers, who were always ready to clarify
I am very much grateful to Training and placement
officer, BHAGWANT UNIVERSITY, AJMER for allowing
me to get Training at IOCL, Barauni refinery .
Last but not the least, I would like to express my deep
gratitude to all the concerned person with whose cooperation
and coordination I have successfully completed the training in
ABOUT INDIAN OIL CORPORATION LIMITED,BARAUNI
Barauni Refinery was built in collaboration with Russia
and Romania. Situated 125 km from patna, It was built
with an intial cost of Rs. 49.40 crores.
Barauni Refinery was Established in 1964 with a refining
capacity of 1 million metric tonnes per annum .
Its capacity today is 6MMTPA.
Barauni Refinery was initial designed to process low
sulphur Crude Oil (Sweet Crude) of Assam. Hence sweet
crude is being sourced from African, South East, Asian
and Middle East countries like Nigeria ,Iraq, and
The Refinery received crude oil by pipeline from paradeep
on the eastern coat via Haldia.
BARAUNI MAIN PRODUCTS
A pump is a device that moves fluids
(liquids or gases), or sometimes slurries, by
mechanical action. Pumps can be classified into
three major groups according to the method they
use to move the fluid: direct lift, displacement,
and gravity pumps.
Centrifugal pumps are used to transport fluids by
the conversion of rotational kinetic energy to the
hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow. The rotational
energy typically comes from an engine or electric
motor. The fluid enters the pump impeller along or
near to the rotating axis and is accelerated by the
impeller, flowing radially outward into a diffuser
or volute chamber (casing), from where it exits.
DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
2. A bearing is a machine element that constrains relative
motion between moving parts to only the desired motion.
3.MECHANICAL SEAL:A mechanical seal is a device that helps join
systems or mechanisms together by preventing
leakage (e.g. in a plumbing system), containing
pressure, or excluding contamination. A seal
may also be referred to as “packing”.
4.STUFFING BOX:- A stuffing box is
an assembly which is used to house
a gland seal. It is used to prevent
leakage of fluid, such as water or stream
between sliding or the turningSTUFFING of
5.IMPELLER:-An impeller is a rotor used to increase
(or decrease in case of turbines) the pressure and
flow of a fluid or gas. Usually made of iron, steel,
bronze, brass, alumnium or plastic, which transfers
energy from the motor that drives the pump to the
fluid being pumped by accelerating the fluid outwards
from the centre rotation .
1. Centrifugal pumps basically consist of a stationary pump
casing and an impeller mounted on a rotating shafts. The
pump casing provides a pressure boundary for the pump
and contains channels to properly direct the suction and
2. The pump casing has suction and discharge penetration for
the main flow path of a pump and normally has small drain
and vent fittings to remote gases trapped in the pump
casing or to drain the pump casing for maintenance.
3. The centrifugal pump casing guides the liquid from the
suction connection to the centre, or eye, of the impeller.
The barauni refinery has its own thermal power station for
production of steam and electricity. TPS is very important unit
of Barauni refinery. The generated electricity is consumed by
refinery , township and site colony. It also takes power from
BTPS for emergency need . Thermal energy is converted into
electrical energy. Fuel for steam generators comes from AVUI, AVU-II, AVU-III. Steam generated in boilers at high pressure
is dropped on turbine blades, which is coupled to the rotor of
The Exciter produce the magnetic field in the generator . as
per right hand rule, electricity is produce
Some salient features of TPS, Barauni Refinery are following
:A. There are four russian boilers and new boiler of IJT
company LTD. Being installed all are water tube boilers
B. It has two russian turbo generators TG-I AND TG-II each of
capacity 12MW and one indian turbo generated made by
BHEL hyderabad of capacity 12
