What Are Chemical Changes In Matter 1

 1. 1. What are Chemical Changes in Matter? Lesson #3
 2. 2. Chemical & Physical Properties

There are two different ways to describe a substance.

physical properties

chemical properties

Physical keyword “natural” and chemical keyword “changing”.

 3. 3. Physical Properties

physical properties- are traits that involve a substance by itself.

Examples of Physical Properties

-color -smell -size -shape

-hardness -boil -melt -evaporate

-condense –states of matter -etc…

*Physical changes occur all the time.

 4. 4. Chemical Properties

chemical properties- are properties that involve how a substance interacts with other substances.

Keyword for chemical properties are react or reacts.

 5. 5. Chemical Change

chemical change- is a change that results in one or more new substance.

Another term for a chemical change is chemical reaction.

The word react or reacts means “goes through a chemical change”.

Examples of chemical changes:

-burning, rusting, tarnishing, etc….

 6. 6. Compound

compound - is a substance made up of 2 or more different elements that have chemically combined.

What do chemical reactions have to do with compounds?

-Compounds form when elements combine to form new substances during a chemical reaction.

 7. 7. Recognizing Chemical Changes

There are many clues that help us know that a chemical change has taken place.

Often, you can see, hear, or smell the formation of new substances as a chemical change occurs.

Clue Example -gas bubbles form -peroxide on a cut -color change -fireworks -smell -eggs rotting -heat given off -sulfur burning -substance given off -wood burning -new physical property -iron rusting
 8. 8. Conservation of Mass

law of conservation of mass- the mass of the products of a chemical reaction equals the mass of the reactants.

*Chemical changes don’t make new matter. They only make new products form the substances that react.
