NME - COLOURNME’s usual colour scheme is either black,red and white or black, white, red and yellow.This issues colour scheme was black, white,pink and yellow. The colours black and whiteare contradicting each other, as the colourblack holds connotations of power, deathand evil where as white connotes innocenceand purity, this contrast makes the text standout and these colours work well together.The use of pink and yellow suggests thatNME are trying to expand the amount offemales that buy the magazine as the readerprofile is dominated by men, by using thiscolours suggest that the magazine is quitefeminine. Also yellow is the colour ofsunshine and is associated with happiness,therefore suggesting that whoever reads thismagazine will enjoy it, and will be happier ifthey read it.
NME – LAYOUT& DESIGNOn the front cover, the main story isadvertised about Noel Fielding being ‘In hisweirdest interview yet’. These words fit inwith the image very well as in the image, he isnot the normal stereotypical punk as punksnormally have dark eye make up and darkclothing where as he has brightly colouredmake up and clothes. Therefore to look at, theimage is slightly weird and not normal to lookat so, being ‘In his weirdest interview yet’explains why he is dressed in that way. Alsofeatured on the front cover is a story about aprevious solo artist coming back into themusic industry, the image is of the artiststanding alone, as he is a solo artist, lookingvery serious and determined. This suggeststhat he means business and wants todominate the music industry. The head linefor the double-page spread reads ‘TAKE AIM’,the font used links in very well with thesewords as its very jagged and rough, which iswhat describes and arrow.
NME - IMAGESThe majority of the images featured in themagazine, are of stereotypical grunges,dressed in black, dark make up andblack, long, scruffy hair. I think that theimages reflect upon the audience, andsuggest that the people in the images aregoing to look similar to the audience.They also show the audience who toaspire to, and I can see the people in theimages being idols for the audience. Asthere is a lot of rock music storiesfeatured within this magazine, the imagesreflect upon this as the images are ofpeople with in the rock music industry,therefore by looking at the images, anaudience would think to buy this if theyhad an interest in rock music.
NME – FRAMINGThe first picture shows an artist sitting alone, hisbody language suggests that he is thinking aboutsomething, which grabs the readers attention asthey are made to wonder what he is looking atand what he is thinking about. It is also a midshot and manages to frame in the records andpictures in the background, this something thereaders can relate to as the NME reader profilestates that their readers are obsessed with musicand would probably have records hanging in theirroom or house just like this. The second pictureis mid shot and frames the artists in their naturalenvironment which appeals to the reader as allthe people in the picture are pulling funny facesor laughing, so therefore the reader wants to beinvolved and have a good time with them. Thethird picture is manipulated to suggest to thereader that Noel Fielding is a target and is havingknifes thrown at him, NME have done this topromote the story line ‘Take Aim’.
NME – WRITTENCODES & LANGUAGEAll the straplines on the front cover are the right sizeand would be easy to see from a reasonabledistance, the font used is plain and makes a bigimpact as it’s a very blocky font, therefore it is easyto read and again, would be visible from a distance.The wording used, for example, ‘INVADE’, ‘WHO THEHELL’ and ‘REBELLIOUS’ suggest to the audiencethat this magazine is of the rock genre, and wouldappeal to the audience as these words are quitefeisty and snappy and would easily get the audienceinterested. Also a strap line that caught my eye wasthe one that directly addressed me, this is a goodtechnique as this will instantly grab the audiencesattention because its almost as if the magazine isspeaking to you. The colours used of this straplineare black on yellow, this is also very attentiongrabbing as it relates to a bee, suggesting to theaudience that the story is going to sting you its thatamazing.
NME - LANGUAGEFirst thing I noticed was that the double pagespread was mostly focused on the mainimage and the actual story was merely a smallbox at the bottom of the page, therefore, thefont size used may be too small for somepeople to read with bad eye sight. However,NME uses a series of questions to grab thereaders attention, for example, ‘What paintingwould Noel Fielding live in if he could?’. I alsonoticed that NME used a lot of humour toattract the reader, for example ‘Who has thebest nose in showbiz?’.
NME - CONCLUSIONI found that NME’s strengths were in how they were able to relate totheir readers through images and language style. Linking to the Usesand Gratifications theory by Blumler & Katz 1974, the readers will usethis magazine to fulfill their needs for person identity, as they will lookat all the artists and groups and relate to them through their love formusic or dress sense. A number of the images created stereotypes(Branston and Stafford 2010) as they perceived particular groups andpeople to dress and look a certain way, for example on the front coverthe image was of a stereotypical ‘punk rocker’, which suggestedstraight away that people who liked to listen to punk rock and dressedlike the man on the front would enjoy this magazine and find itinteresting but excluded people who didnt like that type of music. Ithink NME should have their double page spread more about the storythan the actual image as I thought the image was far too big andcovered up most of the page, so that people who wanted to know moreabout Noel Fielding would be able to. I like NME’s layout and designtechniques, I like the way the front page is layed out and I can see mymagazine front cover being similar.
