Day of Prayer- Praying with the BIble

  1. 2. The Bible – the Word of God <ul><ul><li>God’s Will - purpose; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>God’s Word - promises; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>God’s Way - teaching us and transforming us. </li></ul></ul>

Praying with the Bible <ul><li>Meditate ( meditor - Latin-to practice, to think over.) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>reading unhurriedly, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>allowing the words to sink into us; </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Our disposition : </li></ul><ul><ul><li>lifting our hearts to God, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>be open to what God wants to say through what we read or hear. </li></ul></ul>

Praying with the Bible <ul><ul><ul><li>In groups – as community </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>(Mass – Liturgy of the Word; </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Bible reflection groups (eg. Lectio Divina) ; </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>BECs </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Individually </li></ul></ul></ul>
  4. 5. Praying with the Bible (Individually)- 6 P <ul><li>1. Prepare : select passage from Bible, mark it. </li></ul><ul><li>2. Place : where you can be alone; </li></ul><ul><li>3. Posture : Relaxed and peaceful; </li></ul><ul><li>4. Presence of God : Be conscious of the presence of God; and your desire to pray; </li></ul>
  5. 6. Praying with the Bible (Individually)- 6 P <ul><li>5. Passage : Read the passage unhurriedly; </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Do not look for “profound thoughts”, resolutions; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>But, pause if any word or phrase strikes you, consoles you or even disturbs you; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Have a “conversation” (colloquy) with God. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>6. Prayer : End with a short prayer of thanks. </li></ul>

Praying with the Bible An exercise (Rom 12: 9-13) <ul><li>Prepare: select passage from Bible, mark it. </li></ul><ul><li>Place: where you can be alone; </li></ul><ul><li>Posture: Relaxed and peaceful; </li></ul><ul><li>Presence of God : Be conscious of the presence of God; and your desire to pray; </li></ul><ul><li>Passage: Read the passage unhurriedly; </li></ul><ul><li>Prayer: End with a short prayer of thanks. </li></ul>
  7. 8. <ul><li>Footnotes: </li></ul><ul><li>Praying Scripture – not just getting-through passages and books – but letting meaning and value of each word sink into your life; </li></ul><ul><li>Do not be discouraged if nothing seems to happen during prayer…God hears you alright! </li></ul><ul><li>Establish a Prayer routine- be faithful to it. </li></ul><ul><li>Review and reflect - your Faith Journal – to see more clearly God’s presence in your life. </li></ul><ul><li>6 P – it’s one of the ways. </li></ul>
  8. 9. Just remember… <ul><li>“ Prayer is turning the heart toward God - when a person prays, he enters into a living relationship with God”, and… </li></ul><ul><li>Prayer is an encounter </li></ul><ul><li>Talk, listen and respond. </li></ul>
