  1. 1. “Postal Registered No: TNlCH(C)l102l09-11" “Regd. With the Registrar of News Papers under RNI No. I TNENG/2006/17597” WPP N0. TN/ PMG (CCR) WPP — 132/10-11 love 5 SeuaIava’s News letter - November 2010 SGIIIG 8 PI‘il= G-BGII Dear Friends, Few years back, with help from TCS friends in Mumbai, we were able to arrange for a week long trip for Sevalaya children to Mumabi and Pune. This was followed by many other trips to Hyderabad, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram etc. , all with help of local TCSers. We also have a yearly trip to Puttaparthi, arranged by one of the Sai samithies. When the children come back from such trips, we sit down with them and chat about what they saw, what they learnt etc. Just after the very first trip, we were moved when children told us that that was the first time they got onto a train! They must be 13 to 15 years old, but have never boarded a train before. We never thought about this and it was an eye opener for us to understand that getting onto a train is a luxury which these village children could not afford. They look at the speeding train from a distance, read about railways in their lessons, form a train with each child holding the back of the other child and play train games, but never got an opportunity to board a train! Going to Mumbai, Pune etc. , was of secondary importance, but the train journey itself was the main attraction. If this is the case of poor village children, some of our staff have also not got a chance to travel by train and none of them have got a chance to fly on an airplane or go abroad. Not many travel out of the country (even travel for fun within the country is a luxury! ) from the villages and that too school teachers, they can't even dream about it. Two teachers from Sevalaya, Ms. Annapoorna and Mr. Kingston got this rare chance this year. They went to United Kingdom November 2010 Chennai on a school exchange visit to Cunningham Hill Junior Schoool at St. A|bans, just outside London. TCS UK helped us to get this contact and the visit is part of a four year partnership with British council. The teachers from Sevalaya handled some classes in the UK school and also learnt the differences in the education methodology. We will be working to understand the best of both worlds and try and improve the education system in Sevalaya. Next year four more teachers will do this visit. This will be followed by more teachers and children in the following years. Teachers from UK and children from UK will also visit Sevalaya every year. British council is doing this program with many schools in India, but this is the first time they are engaged with a Tamil medium village school run by a charity organization. Passport, Visa, foreign exchange, time difference, jet lag, different English accent etc. were all not known to our teachers and children. Now everyone is getting ready to apply for passports, trying to understand English weather etc. Few years ago, even going to Chennai was a big trip for our village teachers and children and today they are discussing what to see in London ! Thanks & Regards Murali LOVE ALL SERVE ALL

  4. 4. Gandhiji’s Fasts Xlll Epic Fast-3 The Fast ends; but the crusade continues! On September 20,1932, Gandhiji issued a statement which stated inter alia, “ I am untouchable by choice, and I have endeavored to qualify myself to represent, not the upper ten even among the ‘untouchables’ because be it said to their shame there are castes and classes among them, but my ambition is to represent and identify myself either, as far as possible with the lowest strata of ‘untouchables’ namely the‘ invisib| es' and the 'unapproachab| es'. ..It will not be by reservation of seats but will be by the strenuous work of the Hindu reformers in their midst, and it is because I feel that this separation would have killed all prospect of reform that my whole soul has rebelled against it. . . . One hundred lives given for this noble cause would be. .. poor penance done by Hindus for the atrocious wrongs they have heaped upon helpless men and women of their own faith. .. I would urge them not to swerve from the path of strictest justice. My fast I want to throw in the scales of justice and if it wakes up the Caste Hindus from their slumber, and ifthey are roused to a sense of duty it will have served its purpose. ..” Deep seated prejudices suddenly seemed to give way. Many traditional temples threw open their gates to the "untouchables". Gandhiji said, “They have only now admitted God. Hitherto, the images, which the custodians, falsely, and in their pride, thought had God within, were god| ess. .”. There was a flurry of activity and there were several rounds of talks between the Hindu leaders and leaders representing the “untouchables” SPONSORSHIP DETAILS SPONSORSHIP FOOD CHILDREN HOME OLD AGE HOME Contribution{Rs) Endowments{Rs)Contribution(Rs) Endowments(Rs) like Dr. Ambedkar. One suggestion made outwas that for a portion of the seats, the “untouchables” vote among themselves and prepare a panel. Then the entire electorate, including the “untouchables” will vote to elect one among them. Gandhiji found a flaw in this scheme. He reasoned, “This will again divide the “untouchables “into two separate groups. There will be the panel groups and there will be the other group which will come by direct e| ection. ..This will create a feeling of superiority and inferiority among the Depressed Classes. Again he said, what is the logic in applying panel system for some seats only? If it is good, let it be applied to all seats. .. Dr. Ambedkar appreciated the suggestion of the panel system for all the seats and said it was“very kind. ” The Poona Pact was signed on this basis by the “Hindu” leaders and the leaders of ‘the Untouchable section. While under the British Government proposal, only 71 seats would have been reserved forthis section, the number of seats reserved under this Pact was 148. The Pact received the approval of the British Government. Gandhiji ended his fast on September 26, to the singing of Vaishnava Janato and handing over ofa glass oforange juice by Kasturba Gandhi. Gandhiji then intensified his campaign for eradication of untouchability, by forming an All India Anti—Untouchabi| ity League and embarking on a country wide tour.
