• Don’t judge the kids, or their surroundings, just be open and be there for the kids
• Don’t assume you or the kids have control of the environment
• Western standards, goals and way of life should not be considered “better” or superior
• Kids that are distant or standoffish at first come around after a few day
• Going on this trip makes one value what we have here even more
• Don’t stress over the little things, schedules change; be flexible

  4. 4. 4 History Ukraine became independent again after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine continues to maintain the second largest military in Europe, after that of Russia. The country is home to 46.2 million people, 77.8 percent of whom are ethnic Ukrainians, with sizable minorities of Russians, Belarusians and Romanians. The Ukrainian language is the only official language in Ukraine, while Russian is also widely spoken. The dominant religion in the country is Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which has heavily influenced Ukrainian architecture, literature and music. The Chernobyl disaster was the worst nuclear power plant accident in history in terms of cost and casualties.
