  5. 5. NGO Define Contd. NGOS ARE VOLUNTARY. THE FORMATION IS ON A VOLUNTARY BASES WITH ELEMENT OF VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION IN THE ORGANISATION. NGOS ARE PARTICULARLY INDEPENDENT OF GOVERNMENT AND OTHER PUBLIC AUTHORITIES, POLITICAL PARTIES, OR COMMERCIAL ORGANISATIONS.
  6. 6. NGO Define Contd. NGOS DIFFER FROM INFORMAL OR AD HOC GROUPS BY HAVING SOME DEGREE OF FORMAL OR INSTITUTIONAL EXISTENCE.USUALLY, NGOS HAVE FORMAL STATUES OR OTHER GOVERNING DOCUMENT, SETTING OUT THEIR MISSION, OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE. THEY ARE ACCOUNTABLE TO THEIR MEMBERS AND DONORS
  7. 7. HISTORY OF NGOINTERNATIONAL NGOS HAVE A HISTORY DATING BACK TO 1839. ROTARY, LATER ROTARY INTERNATIONAL, WAS FORMED IN 1904. IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT BY 1914 THERE WERE 1083 NGOS.THEY WERE ANTI-SLAVERY MOVEMENT AND THE MOVEMENT FOR WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE AND REACHED A PEAK AT THE TIME OF THE WORLD DISARMAMENT CONFERENCE.HOWEVER THE PHRASE “NGO” ONLY BECAME POPULAR WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT OF UNITED NATIONS ORGANISATION IN 1945.
