  1. 1. Serenity Weight Loss and Detoxification Program© Kidney Detox InstructionsWellness ProgramPurpose: Rid your body of toxins and impurities, with a focus onthe kidneys.Located on each side of our spine and protected by the rib cage, the kidneysare a powerful cleansing system that can filter more than 48 gallons of bloodevery day. The kidneys help to removing waste products and toxins, such asurea and ammonia. They also control our phosphate, sulfur and sodium levels, while regulating the production of blood cells and maintaining the proper pHlevel in our bodies. Our kidneys never rest and often become overloaded, especially when our diet is high in processed foods. Additionally, the liver canbecome overly toxic and unable to perform its functions, and thus will passexcess waste to the kidneys for processing. When both of these organsbecome overloaded, symptoms such as water retention, urinary tractinfections, mineral deficiencies and kidney stones can ensue. To keep kidneys healthy we need to adhere to a diet that avoids excess saltand sugar while making sure that we have ample vitamins and minerals byeating fresh, organic foods. When our urine stream is colorless and odorless,we have proof that our kidneys are functioning at their optimum level. Page 1

  7. 7. Other Kidney Detox TipsStep 1The key to healthy kidneys comes from supplementing the body with liquid minerals, eating anabundance of fresh, vegetables and supplementing with green powdered supplements. Freshproduce helps to cleanse, regenerate and build our bodies by providing our organs with naturalfoods that are unadulterated by cooking processes or additives. Green salads with fresh lemonand olive oil dressing also help keep our organs remain alkalized, energized and cleansed.Step 2Cranberries contain an essential nutrient and antioxidant called proanthocyanidin. They are alsorich in quinine, which converts to a substance called hippuric acid that helps to eliminate toxins inthe body. You can buy fresh, unsweetened cranberry juice or place one cup of fresh cranberries ina blender with half a lemon and pure water to make your own. Grapes and unsweetened grapejuice are also an excellent choice for detoxifying the kidneys, as they help to flush excess uricacid from the system. Please note however, it is difficult to eat enough grapes to get the truedetoxifying benefit of grapes, so supplements that contain the active ingredient in grapes is thebetter option.Step 3When magnesium is deficient, due to high blood pressure and toxic overload, kidney function canbe seriously compromised. To ensure that your body is getting enough magnesium, which keepsthe kidneys functioning well while nourishing the body, make sure you eat as many organic, darkgreen vegetables as possible. Additionally, seeds, nuts and whole grains will help keep yourmagnesium levels where they need to be.Step 4Herbs such as dandelion, water plantain, meadowsweet, nettle, parsley and lemon balm help todetoxify the kidneys through their ability to sweep out waste and replenish the organ with nutrients.A tea made with nettle and dandelion makes an excellent flush and can be drunk two to threetimes a day. A tea made from uva extract, which comes from a type of grape, is ideal for toningand strengthening the kidneys, while also helping to reduce water retention. Gravel root has longbeen used in Chinese medicine for helping to dissolve kidney stones. A tea made by boilingpieces of peeled ginger root with a few pinches of turmeric added has astringent properties, helping to rid waste products from the kidneys. Once you boil the tea, strain it and drink it twice aday until your urine clears. Wu Zi Wan is a traditional Chinese formula made into a tea thatrevitalizes the urinary tract by sweeping away excess toxins.Step 5Water is perhaps the most important element in a kidney detoxification program. Drink water asrecommended on page 2. Water prevents mineral salts from collecting and eventually becomingstones that block kidney function. This is NOT the same salt as table salt. Additionally, water willprovide a constant flush to the system, assisting the kidneys in the removal of toxins. Page 7
  8. 8. SERENITY NEWS: The LabTest and kidney function 1. How is it used? The blood urea nitrogen or BUN test is primarily used, along with the creatinine test, to evaluatekidney function in a wide range of circumstances, to help diagnose kidney disease, and to monitorpeople with acute or chronic kidney dysfunction or failure. It also may be used to evaluate apersons general health status when ordered as part of a basic metabolic panel (BMP) orcomprehensive metabolic panel (CMP). 2. When is it ordered?BUN is part of both the BMP and CMP, groups of tests that are widely used: When someone has non-specific complaints As part of a routine testing panel To check how the kidneys are functioning before starting to take certain drug therapies When an acutely ill person comes to the emergency room and/or is admitted to the hospital During a hospital stayBUN is often ordered with creatinine when kidney problems are suspected. Some signs andsymptoms of kidney dysfunction include: Fatigue, lack of concentration, poor appetite, or trouble sleeping Swelling or puffiness (edema), particularly around the eyes or in the face, wrists, abdomen, thighs, or ankles Urine that is foamy, bloody, or coffee-colored A decrease in the amount of urine Problems urinating, such as a burning feeling or abnormal discharge during urination, or a change in the frequency of urination, especially at night Mid-back pain (flank), below the ribs, near where the kidneys are located High blood pressureBUN also may be ordered: At regular intervals to monitor kidney function in those with chronic diseases or conditions such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, and myocardial infarction (heart attack) At regular intervals to monitor kidney function and treatment in people with known kidney disease Prior to and during certain drug treatments to monitor kidney function At regular intervals to monitor the effectiveness of dialysis 3. What does the test result mean? Page 8
  9. 9. Increased BUN levels suggest impaired kidney function. This may be due to acute or chronickidney disease, damage, or failure. It may also be due to a condition that results in decreasedblood flow to the kidneys, such as congestive heart failure, shock, stress, recent heart attack, orsevere burns, to conditions that cause obstruction of urine flow, or to dehydration.BUN concentrations may be elevated when there is excessive protein* breakdown (catabolism),significantly increased protein in the diet, or gastrointestinal bleeding (because of the proteinspresent in the blood).Low BUN levels are not common and are not usually a cause for concern. They may be seen insevere liver disease, malnutrition, and sometimes when a person is overhydrated (too much fluidvolume), but the BUN test is not usually used to diagnose or monitor these conditions. Both decreased and increased BUN concentrations may be seen during a normal pregnancy. If one kidney is fully functional, BUN concentrations may be normal even when significantdysfunction is present in the other kidney. Note: Protein per se is not the problem; a history of consuming poorly digested protein is however, and that category is most often red meat.Review the sample lab report below. This is a real person who has pretty good numbers and has no known medical challenges. Notice, none of this person ’s scores are out-of-range*. The numbers related to kidney function are highlighted in yellow *Side Bar: We would be remiss not to draw your attention to the glucosescore that is @ the upper limit. In our opinion, this score is noteworthy because this is a fasting (no food) reading, and the score is still 7 points shy of the maximum allowable range. Please note that some labs have reduced the range to 60-80, making this score even more relevant. If you have a score like this, we think you should it more closely and 2. start dietary changes NOW. 3. Ask for your A1c score, which provides an average of your blood sugar readings over a 90 day period Page 9
