What is SEGREGATION?
■ The rule or practice of separating people of different races,
classes, or ethnic groups.
■ Forcing them to have different schools, housing, and public
facilities.
■ A form of discrimination.

SEGREGATION (Background)
■ Began in the United States began
■ In its de jure form with the passage of Jim Crow laws in the
American South.
■ Jim Crow laws mandated the segregation of public schools,
public places, and public transportation, and the segregation of
restrooms, restaurants, and drinking fountains for whites and
blacks.
