  3. 3. INTRODUCTION 1980s was an era of expansion of qualitative research in terms of volume and number. This decade gained remarkable profit in finance and Research. Especially in Research Agency headed by Wendy Gordon and Colleen Ryan (Initially started in 1970s).

Research Agency: The Research Business International (TRBI) Colleen Ryan  Colleen is one of the gurus of the international research industry.  Along with her business partner Wendy Gordon, Colleen founded and grew her business.  The Research Business International (TRBI), counted into the 6th largest research company in the UK.  Considered one of the forefathers of modern qualitative research, her business spawned the boutique research category in the UK.

Cont… In 1980s, Wendy Gordon and Colleen Ryan became successful in research. They found a quick research (Q-research) with the help of Schlackman,which was the demand of clients in the qualitative research.  The aim of Q-Research was to identify and supply the needs of clients. Answers, explanations were delivered in engaging oral presentations, without any written documents.
  6. 6. Cont… The number of researchers increased. Qualitative research replaced the degree of psychology. Many companies found out that an intelligent mind and a brief training in non-directive interviewing were enough for research.

Market Research society (MRS) The Market Research Society is a professional body for market research based in London.  It was established in 1946 at the offices of the London Press Exchange.  It represents the views of its members to government and in the press Market Research society (MRS) declared this period (1980) as most successful period in terms of business.
  8. 8. 1980s:An era of Expansion of Qualitative Research Strategic research group led by Roddy Glen and Barry Ross focused on advertising research. By 1987 ,the question regarding quality of qualitative research was posed from Market Research Society (MRS) , ‘What determines quality in qualitative research ?’(Bailey, 1987)
  9. 9. Cont… This question remains in want of a clear answer. Big clients companies move to fill the void by establishing their own accreditation of qualitative researches
