  4. 4. What is Employability? Employability refers to a person's capability for gaining and maintaining employment. Employability depends on the knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) individual’s possess and the way they present those assets to employers. Employability is affected by Demand & Supply – a supply-side (individuals, applicants) and demand-side (recruiters, employers, economy). © segunakiode.com 2014 4
  5. 5. What is Employability Skills? Employability skills are the skills you have developed inside and outside of school that you can transfer to the workplace. Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes (KSAs) relating to a particular job. The ability to identify suitable job opportunities and self presentation for job applications and interviews. Your academics alone is not enough to automatically open job doors for you after school, you need employability skills. What are Recruiters & Employers looking for? © segunakiode.com 2014 5
  6. 6. What Do Employers REALLY Want? Employers are hiring everyday but they complain that there is scarcity of quality talents in the labour market that’s what we call ‘the War for Talent’ in human resources. Any job seeker (fresh graduates inclusive) that hopes to secure a job with any employer of labour must develop capacity to see from the employers’ perspective. Every employer is always willing to hire an employee with the hope that such an employee would add ‘value’ to the organization. Potential Value Experiential Value © segunakiode.com 2014 6
  7. 7. What Do Employers REALLY Want? Contd. Every employers want job seekers that would be a GOOD FIT in terms of Skills set for the workplace. Some of these skills set are: Professionalism – do you possess the skill, good judgment, and polite behavior require in the workplace? Positive Attitude – do you possess abundance of enthusiasm and a “can do” attitude? Self-management – do you possess the ability to take responsibility per time? Communication Skills – do you have the ability for business communication? Technologically Savvy – do you have basic technology skills needed in the workplace? Every employer want job seekers that would be able to CONNECT theoretical knowledge with business realities. © segunakiode.com 2014 7
  8. 8. Crafting A Winning Résumé The right mindset for writing a résumé/CV is that of a marketing mindset. You’re a product being sold to a potential employer and the goal of your résumé is to communicate what you can do. You have to see your résumé as a marketing tool because that is what it is; employers’ first impression about you. A résumé would not get you the job but it gives you an interview opportunity. Résumés are ‘fluid documents’ that need to change for each new job application. © segunakiode.com 2014 8
  9. 9. The Right Interview Mindset An interview is a conversation between two or more people where questions are asked by the interviewer to elicit facts or statements from the interviewee. In the case of a job interview, the interviewer (usually the employer or recruiter) assesses the interviewee (potential employee) on the suitability to do a job or otherwise. A job interview is a game of perception so make a great impression. As a job seeker, the secret sauce to acing any job interview is to make a great impression as fast and deep as you can and leave in a blaze of glory. A Job interview is more of a game of perception than competence. © segunakiode.com 2014 9

  11. 11. What is a Career? Career describes an individual’s journey through learning, work and other aspects of life. Career is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as a person’s “course or progress through life (or a distinct portion of life)”. One critical factor here is the fact that there is no career without an individual. The concept of a career is centered round an individual’s life. You would agree with me that your career is your life and not mine. You are born to solve a problem, meaning your Career is coded into your DNA. © segunakiode.com 2014 11
  12. 12. What is Career Development? Career Development is the lifelong process of managing learning, work and transitions in order to move toward a personally determined and evolving preferred future. Career development is how individuals manage their careers within and between organizations or how organizations structure the career progress of their employees. Career development is a personal responsibility every individual must take and not to be left to the organization © segunakiode.com 2014 12
  13. 13. Career Management Model Self- Assessment Exploring Options Skill Development Personal Marketing Career Enrichment © segunakiode.com 2014 13
  14. 14. Self Discovery & Your Career “Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is enlightenment’ – Lao Tzu Many fail to realize that looking for a job without the realization of who they are is planning to fail in their career journey. ‘Can you tell me about yourself?’ This question is actually about self-discovery and your answer helps employers know if you have discovered your own ‘unique value proposition’ which is deeply embedded in your personality. Self assessment is instrumental in the continuous journey (not an event) of self-discovery. © segunakiode.com 2014 14
  15. 15. Elements of A Successful Career Strengths People Passion © segunakiode.com 2014 15
  16. 16. Elements of A Successful Career Contd. © segunakiode.com 2014 16 Playing to Your Strengths - People excel by maximizing strengths, not by fixing their weaknesses. Strength = Talent + Knowledge + Skills Setting Your Passion Free - Passion, drive, motivation, zeal, intense emotion, compelling enthusiasm or desire for anything. Working with the right set of people (cultural fit) - “everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
  17. 17. Concept of Career Triangle Job Satisfaction Lifestyle You Values & Goals The Pay © segunakiode.com 2014 17
  18. 18. Concept of Career Triangle Contd. © segunakiode.com 2014 18 Job Satisfaction – this is measured by the quality of the job you undertake, professional development opportunities and the culture of the organization. Lifestyle – this is measured by the raw hours required of the job, how much control you have over your work schedule and work-life balance. The Pay – this is measured by the total rewards (cash & non- cash benefits) and the social prestige the job offers per time.
