  3. 3. What Are Printables? Why Would People Need or Buy Them? A printable is a digital file (PDF, JPEG or any other format) with different types of content and/or graphics that you buy or get for free (if you sign up for a newsletter, for example), download and can print how often you want for personal, educational and sometimes also for commercial use. In our world today where we spend most of our time and money online, we want to get information and products fast and cheap. For this reason, printables have become very popular for some time past. Instead of waiting days or weeks for a paperback book to arrive, you can download and use printables right away. They save you time and money and sometimes you even get printables for free.
  4. 4. Types of Printables You Can Create and Give Away or Sell  Educational Printables  Printable PDF Books  Art Printables  Craft Printables  Doodle and Coloring Pages  Organization Printables like Calendars, Planners, Journals, Lists etc.  Pattern Printables for Crocheting, Knitting, Sewing and other Handicrafts  Graphic Design Printables  Office/Business Printables like Stationery, Business Cards etc.  Recipes  Party Printables  Puzzles and Board Game Printables  Christian/Bible Printables  Blogging Printables and many more
  5. 5. Introduction to Coloring Pages Coloring has always been a simple activity to entertain and calm down children. Since 2012 coloring and coloring books have also become popular among adults. Coloring not only brings memories from childhood back, it also has health benefits. Several studies have proven that coloring can help reduce anxiety, calm down, reduce stress, create focus and being more mindful. In a research of 2005, they found out that people who colored mandalas, round shapes filled with geometric patterns, were able to drop their anxiety levels. Coloring is almost like meditation and enables us to switch off our brains and focus on the moment. In this state, we forget our worries and problems and are able to reduce anxiety and stress. The coloring boom has created a great opportunity for artists and other creative people to make money by selling coloring books and coloring pages.
  6. 6. Tips Before Publishing Coloring Pages and Books Select a Theme Since there are so many adult coloring books on the market, it’s better to select a theme for your book to stand out from the crowd. People are looking for certain topics like Christmas coloring books, animals coloring books or flowers coloring books. You can go more niche and create Christmas trees coloring books, insects coloring books or tulips coloring books, just to name a few examples. Choose a Good Amount of Illustrations Most coloring books contain 30 to 40 different illustrations. The more coloring pages you provide, the better. If you publish less than 30 designs, you have to sell your book at a lower price. You need less pages for coloring pages sets and you can even sell single coloring pages.
  7. 7. Ideas for Coloring Pages Create Patterns Coloring Pages You can create hand drawn patterns or use a graphic program like Adobe Photoshop, GIMP or Repper. Create Doodle Coloring Pages Creating doodles is a simple way to create coloring pages. You hand draw simple shapes, patterns, and motifs, scan them and edit them with a graphic program. To learn more about doodling, I recommend my doodle Kindle book “Doodle Inspiration: Learn How To Doodle”.
  8. 8. Ideas for Coloring Pages Create Mandala Coloring Pages Mandalas, circular patterns, are very popular with most people so this is another great way to create coloring pages. You can hand draw your mandalas or use a graphic program like Adobe Photoshop, GIMP or a mandala software like Color Mandala. In my Kindle book “Mandala Inspiration: Learn How To Create Mandalas” you can learn more about mandalas and how to create them. Create Lettering and Quotes Coloring Pages Another good option for adult coloring books is creating beautiful letterings and quotes you can add doodles and patterns to. You can either hand draw them or use a graphic program.
  9. 9. Ideas for Coloring Pages Turn Photos into Coloring Pages You can also turn photos into coloring pages though it is not the best option to create adult coloring pages. It’s ideal for creating grayscale coloring books which have become popular at the moment. Take your own photos or use photos with the legal rights to use them for commercial purposes like Public Domain Pictures. Use a graphic program and apply a sketch or similar filter to turn your photo into a line art drawing. An easy way to turn your photos into a line art drawing is using the Free Picture Stencil Maker from RapidResizer Online. Don’t Use Too Much Black in Your Illustrations I have read several complaints of customers about illustrations that contain too many black spaces. If you create a coloring e-book you have to keep in in mind that people have to print your book. They don’t want to use too much ink for printing your coloring book. So it’s better to use not too much black in your illustrations.
  10. 10. How to Create and Edit Coloring Illustrations When it comes to creating and editing coloring illustrations, you have three options:  You can create the illustrations yourself, either hand draw them or use graphic programs.  You can purchase stock illustrations or PLR coloring pages and insert them into your book.  You can hire an illustrator to create the illustrations. Let’s learn more about each of the three options.
  11. 11. Creating Coloring Illustrations Yourself If you are an artist or good at drawing, I recommend to create the illustrations for your coloring pages and books yourself. It is much work but you can save money and your illustrations are unique. Hand Drawn or Using Graphic Programs? Let’s discuss both options. It’s really up to you to decide whether to hand draw your illustrations or to use a graphic program. If you are good at drawing by hand, you can go for it. You will need some good pencils and pens and if you make mistakes, it’s not so easy to correct them compared to a graphic program. If you draw the illustrations by hand, you will need to scan them to get them on your computer for further editing. Using a graphic program can be more flexible if you know how to use it because you can get rid of mistakes easily and you have a variety of options to edit your illustrations to make them look good and clean. You can create your illustrations either directly with the graphic program or with a drawing tablet. I hand draw illustrations that are intricate because I find it much easier than using a graphic program. I haven’t been able to work properly with a drawing tablet yet. I have a better control over my lines when drawing by hand. For illustrations that have easy lines and shapes, I prefer to use a graphic program because I can skip the scanning process and I can work directly on my computer.
  12. 12. Recommended Pencils, Pens, and Paper for Drawing Coloring Illustrations by Hand I like to sketch my coloring illustrations with a pencil first. I prefer pencils with a softer lead because they can be erased more easily. I use HB pencils. You should try out yourself what kind of pencil works best for you. Then I use drawing pens preferably with a black pigment ink (drawings created with pigment ink will last longer than drawings created with dye ink). The pens should be fade-resistant, smudge-proof, waterproof and bleedproof. I use different nib sizes from 05 (finest) to 08 (biggest) depending on the illustration I want to draw. With regard to paper, I use a drawing paper that is suitable for drawing in various dry media. It should be acid-free, medium weight (80 lbs, not lower than that because you can’t create good drawings with a paper that is too thin), and medium texture. That works best for me. Of course, you can choose any drawing paper that is suitable for drawing line art.
  13. 13. Where to Get Inspiration for Creating Coloring Illustrations You can get inspiration for your illustrations nearly everywhere.  Just go out for a walk and look around you. You will see different shapes, colors, patterns, lights etc. in nature.  Look at what other artists have created to get your own ideas. The easiest way is going online and searching for drawings, illustrations, adult coloring pages and books and you will get a lot of inspiration There.  Keep a journal where you put in sketches, images from magazines and newspapers etc. Every time you need inspiration, you can look into your journal and you will certainly come up with an idea.
  14. 14. How to Edit and Clean up Line Art Illustrations in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator Here are two videos that teach you how to edit and clean up line art illustrations in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. In the two videos a mandala illustration is used as an example. You can follow the steps for any line art illustration.
  15. 15. Purchase Stock Illustrations and PLR Coloring Pages For Creating Coloring Pages and Books While purchasing stock illustrations or PLR coloring pages (purchasing coloring pages with the rights to reshare and resell them) for creating coloring pages sets and coloring books may be an option, it is not the best one because anyone can buy these stock illustrations and PLR coloring pages and distribute them. The chances that someone already has or know one or more illustrations which you put in your coloring pages sets or coloring books are big and may disappoint or annoy people. I would not recommend creating coloring sets and coloring books that only contains stock illustrations but you can add a few of them in addition to your own illustrations (or illustrations someone has created for you). Your coloring pages sets and coloring books should be unique, not a mass product. I have seen some authors and publishers who think they could make some quick money by just putting together stock illustrations and produce lots of coloring books in a short time. People have bought these books but some people have also been annoyed and have written negative reviews mentioning that the book was only full of stock illustrations that nearly look all the same. This is not a strategy I would follow and recommend.
  16. 16. Hire an Illustrator to Create the Illustrations for You If you can’t draw the illustrations yourself, you should not buy stock illustrations but hire an illustrator to create the illustrations for you. Since I draw all my illustrations myself, I have no experience with hiring someone to create the illustrations. Hiring an illustrator is costly so you have to set a realistic budget or use a platform like Fiverr where the illustrations are cheap but may (or may not) lack quality in some cases. Here are some platforms where you can hire someone: Fiverr Upwork Freelancer Hire An Illustrator DeviantArt Behance
  17. 17. How to Create Coloring Pages Watch the two videos to learn how to create coloring pages using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. In the two videos a mandala illustration is used as an example. You can follow the steps for any line art illustration.
  18. 18. How to Share and Sell Coloring Pages and Books Once you have learned to create coloring pages, you can share and sell them. Here are some of the ways to share and sell coloring pages and books. How to Share and Coloring Pages and Books for Free Why should you share free coloring pages and books? Well, because people love freebies and it's recommended to share freebies along with your premium products. If people love your free products, they are more willing to buy your premium products. If you are new to this business, sharing freebies is a great way to get your products in front of people and build your brand.
  19. 19. How to Share and Coloring Pages and Books for Free Here are some ideas for sharing your mandala coloring pages and books for free. · Share digital individual coloring pages or digital coloring books on your blog or website for free so people can download them. · Give free coloring pages or books away in return for letting people sign up for your newsletter. · Upload and share coloring pages and books for free on (teacher) marketplaces like Teachers Pay Teachers, Teacher's Notebook, TES, Educents and Gumroad. · Share free coloring pages and books on Social Media like Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest etc. Share them both on your Facebook page and in Facebook groups where you are allowed to share coloring freebies. · Create a free video tutorial or do a Facebook live video sharing how to color a coloring page and offer this free coloring page for download under the video. · Run a giveaway on your blog or Social Media and give away coloring pages and/or books. · Give away free coloring pages or a coloring book with any of your premium coloring products, may it be a set of coloring pages, a coloring book, a coloring course etc. · Share coloring pages for free on Public Domain sites like Pixabay, Public Domain Pictures or Open Clip Art. 20. 20. Different Ways to Sell Your Coloring Pages and Books ● Sell digital coloring pages, coloring pages sets and coloring books on your website or blog. If you have a WordPress blog, you can use plugins like WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads. You can also set up a Shopify or BigCartel store. If you are on a budget, you can use Gumroad or Payhip to place your products on your website or blog. They are free to start. ● Sell digital coloring pages, coloring pages sets and coloring books on marketplaces like Teachers Pay Teachers, Teacher's Notebook, TES, Educents, Etsy and Craftsuprint. ● Sell paperback coloring books using Amazon Createspace, Lulu, IngramSpark, Book Baby or Blurb.
  21. 21. How to Create and Sell Digital Coloring Pages Sets Apart from individual coloring pages, I sell digital coloring pages sets with about 4 to 6 coloring pages. These are especially great for holiday or seasonal coloring pages for which you don’t want to create whole coloring books. Here are the steps I go through for creating coloring pages sets: ● Select 4 to 6 (or the number of coloring pages you want to sell as a set) coloring Pages. ● Edit and save the coloring pages with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop or LibreOffice as JPEG and PDF at the size of 8.5 inches to 11 inches. ● Add your name, the name of your website (if you have one) and copyrights at the bottom of each coloring page. ● Create a cover image which you need to upload on the platforms where you want to sell your coloring pages sets. I create my cover images in Adobe Photoshop.
  22. 22. Here is an example of one of my cover images:
  23. 23. Create a page with your terms of use. You can create it in Word or any other text editing software. Here is one example of how my terms of use page looks like:
  24. 24. Put the coloring pages, the cover image and the terms of use page in one folder. Here is an example:
  25. 25. Select all documents and add them to a ZIP file.
  26. 26. On my computer I need to right click my mouse , then click on „Send to“ and „Compressed (zipped) folder“ to create a ZIP file. It may work similar on your computer. Now you can upload the ZIP file to all online marketplaces you want to sell your coloring pages set on.
  27. 27. How to Create and Sell Digital Coloring Books The process of creating a digital coloring book is almost the same as the process of creating digital coloring pages sets. The only differences are the number of pages and creating one single PDF file of all the coloring pages you want to include in your digital coloring book. Here are the steps I go through for creating digital coloring books: Select at least 20 (or the number of coloring pages you want to include in your digital coloring book) coloring pages.
  28. 28. ● Edit and save the coloring pages with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop or LibreOffice as PDF at the size of 8.5 inches to 11 inches. ● Add your name, the name of your website (if you have one) and copyrights at the bottom of each coloring page. ● Create a cover image for your digital coloring book. I create my cover images in Adobe Photoshop.
  29. 29. Here is an example of one of my cover images:
  30. 30. Merge all coloring pages into one PDF file using a PDF editing software likeAdobe Acrobat Pro DC. I use a free PDF editing software called PDF24. Watch the following video to learn how to merge single pages into one PDF file using PDF24.
  31. 31. How to Create and Sell Paperback Coloring Books There are different platforms where you can create and sell paperback coloring books. Here are some of them: ● Createspace by Amazon ● Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (They also allow creating and sellingpaperbacks now) ● Lulu ● Blurb ● IngramSpark ● Book Baby
  32. 32. How to Create and Sell Paperback Coloring Books Since all these platforms have different requirements and processes for creating coloring books, I can’t provide you with a general tutorial on how to create a paperback coloring book on each of these platforms. I don’t know the requirements and processes of all of these platforms either since I have only published through Createspace and Amazon KDP. So my advice is to start with Createspace or Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing which are free and easy to use for creating and selling your coloring books. Just follow their requirements and instructions which are easy to follow and you will have your coloring book published within a short time. All the other platforms mentioned come with fees as far as I know.
  33. 33. Summary We are at the end of this book and now it's time to wrap up what you have learned.
