  31. 31. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Attract The Right People • Just like a product, what problem do YOU solve? • Who do you want to solve this problem for? • The problem you solve will change over the course of your career. • Map out your future, not just your next role. • If you don’t intentionally design your career, you’ll end up bored and not living your full potential. Great products seek to solve the problem of a specific person.
  32. 32. Creating a Career Board will help you get clear on what you want to do and who you want to do it for.
  33. 33. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Your Career Board • Lay the foundation for you to get strategic about what roles you apply for now so you can get to your future roles. • Help identify gaps and where you may need to level up some skills • Forces you think about factors beyond just job title and salary • A framework to constantly evaluate your career

  36. 36. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com A Tip For Creating Action Steps GOAL Write more frequently on Medium.com • Each Action Step should be measurable, it either happens or it doesn’t. • Each Action step should have a “why” and it should help push you towards a specific goal. • Focusing on building momentum and progress with real Action Steps. ACTION STEPS • Brainstorm article ideas • Select 2 articles to focus on • Write 100 words / day for 5 days • Publish my first article 30 days from now
  37. 37. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Benefits Of Your Career Board • Thoughtfully consider your skills and what you like to do, not just what you’re good at. • Gives you insight into what types of companies and roles to apply to, so you don’t waste time applying to ones that don’t align with your values. • See where you need help and where you are stuck in your career right now.
  38. 38. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Get clear on YOU before you “design” • Do NOT jump straight into the design of your “product” (aka, your portfolio) … that’s how a lot of startups fail. • Get clear on your product first. • Seek to understand your users, the recruiters, hiring managers, people in the interview process, etc. • Get your story down FIRST.
  39. 39. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Prove the true root value you provide • You need an elevator pitch for YOU that goes beyond what you do. • Do not fall into the trap of dumping deliverables into your portfolio, resume, and LinkedIn profile. • Provide context for everything. State the obvious, it may not be obvious to your user. • Think like a lawyer. Your projects are evidence of your skills. Great products focus on benefits, not features. Seek to go beyond deliverables and showcase the value you provide.
  40. 40. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Prove the true root value you provide • Just like a product, YOU need a mission statement, an elevator pitch to use in #alltheplaces • Today, it’s not enough to say “I’m a UX Designer” because that means many things to many people. • Set yourself apart by saying what you do and what you don’t do to help avoid wasting time on roles and interviews that don’t actually fit your career goals. Creating a personal Compass Statement will help give you a filter for what projects to include in your portfolio.
  41. 41. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com The Career Compass Statement is modeled after the idea of a Product Story Statement. You can read about it in this TechCrunch article

  43. 43. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com My company is developing to help a mobile travel tool frequent travelers simplify and organize their travel documents by automatically creating itineraries that are shareable and accessible anywhere.
  44. 44. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Writing your Compass Statement
  45. 45. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com I’m a I’m skilled at I love I get excited about In my next role What part of UX do you focus on? What do you have experience & interest in? What challenges you? What makes you tick? Specific industries? Methods? Size of teams? Goals? New responsibilities? Knowledge to acquire?
  46. 46. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com I’m a I’m skilled at
I love I get excited about In my next role Experience Designer. translating research into product concepts, iterating and testing designs, and creating prototypes. Problem solving & human behavior. How technology can impact health care. Work on a larger team and be more involved in testing and iterating our designs.
  47. 47. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com I’m a I’m skilled at
 I love
I get excited about In my next role Senior User Researcher. Planning, conducting, and synthesizing large- scale quantitative and qualitative research. Helping product teams make smarter, people informed, decisions with data. Educating people about doing their own research. I want to collaborate with the product team to
co-design based on the research team’s findings.
  48. 48. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Benefits Of Your Compass Statement • Helps you choose which projects to include, because the projects should be evidence of what you say you can do in your compass statement. • Gives you a consistent narrative for describing yourself - use this on social media profiles, website, resume, etc. • Helps you prevent people from assuming that you can do a specific thing (eg. visual design) because you clearly articulate what you do and don’t do.
  49. 49. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Prove the true root value you provide • Do not fall into the trap of dumping deliverables into your portfolio, resume, and LinkedIn profile. • Explain what you did and more importantly WHY you did it. • Provide context for everything. State the obvious, it may not be obvious to your user. • Think like a lawyer. Your projects are evidence of your skills. Yes, you must “tell the story” for each project. Here’s a framework for how to actually do that.
  50. 50. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com A framework for telling the story of each project 1. What was the company / product? 2. What was the problem to be solved and why did it need to be solved? 3. What was the project timeline? 4. What did you do and why did you do it (process)? 5. What challenges did you encounter? 6. What were the outcomes?
  51. 51. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com You can’t just SHOW you must TELL. A visual without context is asking the user to do too much work.
  52. 52. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com The visual design of your portfolio does matter. • At first, people won’t read your portfolio. So it must be scannable. Create hierarchy with larger headlines so people don’t need to read every word to get the gist of what you did. • Use whitespace. Don’t make your portfolio FEEL crowded and complicated. If you confuse, you lose. • Consider what can be communicated visually versus through text (eg. timelines, team charts, etc)
  53. 53. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Convert the curious to customers • Normally you don’t make a large purchase impulsively … unless you’re on a Target run! • Most purchases happen because we’ve build a relationship and trust with a company over time. • Trust can come through getting to know them, such as a free trial. • Or from word of mouth recommendations. • Of course, these companies have to ASK for the sale! Great products convert people to customers largely through relationship building.
  54. 54. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Convert the curious to customers • Just like a product, YOU need a mission statement, an elevator pitch to use in #alltheplaces • Today, it’s not enough to say “I’m a UX Designer” because that means many things to many people. • Set yourself apart by saying what you do and what you don’t do to help avoid wasting time on roles and interviews that don’t actually fit your career goals. Creating a personal Compass Statement will help give you a filter for what projects to include in your portfolio.
  55. 55. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Trust & Relationship Building Portfolio Cover Letter Resume LinkedIn Profile Job Search Strategy Design Exercises Follow Up Tactics Network Effect Negotiation Skills Interview Skills Career Goals Case Studies Personal Brand Today’s reality is that a job is a result of how you leverage all these elements of your career & job search process.
  56. 56. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com PORTFOLIO + ≠JOB SITES UX JOB A portfolio is not a ticket to a job.
  57. 57. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com The people I’ve worked with have been hired because the didn’t just apply to jobs. The took time to build and nurture relationships.
  58. 58. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Relationship Building 101 • Don’t be a sleaze. This works like dating. Build a relationship, don’t propose on the first date! • Have a clear ask. Without a clear question, you won’t get an answer. Get specific about what you want from this person. • Don’t ask for favors, at first. Use it as a chance to research that specific company and the design culture. • Make it personal: Find common ground or tie the ask to something that shows you did a bit of research about that person, especially if reaching out on LinkedIn.
  59. 59. @SARAHDOODY© 2019 Sarah Doody // www.sarahdoody.com Pro-tip: Don’t forget the impact of follow ups for positions you apply to and thank you’s for interviews you attend.
