Career Path for Leaders
Pinnacle: Respect
People Development: Reproduction
Production: Results
Permission: Relationships
Position: Rights
The Executive: Leaders who are in the service of others.
Leaders that shape the organization & industry
Effective Leader: Leading through leaders. Teams are bigger
and can be 1000+ or larger, multiple portfolios
Competent Leader: Managing through managers. Leading
teams of up to 50 to 100 people to drive results
Contributing Team Member: Leads & 1st time managers.
Directly Managing & influencing up to 10+ people
Highly Capable Individual: ICs, Leads, & 1st time managers.
Directing the work of 4 or more people on a daily basis

Level 1: Position
Highly Capable Individual
Position is the lowest level of leadership
and it is the entry level. Position is the only
level that does not require the ability and
effort to achieve, because positional
leaders have no influence.
The only influence a positional
leader has is that which comes
with the job title. People follow
because they have to.
Positional leaders usually have
difficulty working with
volunteers, younger people,
and the highly educated.
LEVEL
1:
POSITION
Positional leaders should never use fear or the position itself as a
tool to get people to follow. This could result in high turnover and
demotivated teams. Work on relationship building and learning
how to influence people.
AVOID
Level 2: Permission
Contributing Team Member
Level 2 is based entirely on
relationships and people
follow because they want to
When you like people and treat
them as individuals who have
value, you begin to develop
influence and trust. The
environment becomes more
positive.
The agenda at this level of
leadership is not to preserve
your position. It is to get to
know your people and figure
out how to get along with them.
LEVEL
2:
PERMISSION
But, good leaders don’t just create a pleasant working environment; They get things done!
That’s why they must move up to Level 3, which is based on results.
On the Production level, leaders
gain influence and credibility,
and people begin to follow them
because of what they have done
for the organization
Level 3: Production
Competent Leader
On the production level leaders gain
influence and credibility, and people
begin to follow them because of
what they have done for the
organization. Leaders learn to
manage through managers to
become a competent leader.
Many positive things begin
happening when the leaders get to
level 3. Momentum kicks in as the
teams feel they are a winning team
as team outcomes are achieved. At
level 3 the leader is competent, but
not an effective leader.
LEVEL
3:
PRODUCTION
Improved morale and motivation as teams achieve OKRs and KPIs. Work
gets done, dashboards look green, profits go up, turnover goes down, and
goals are achieved.
Momentum kicks in.
OUTCOME
Level 4: People Development
Effective Leader
Level 4 leadership is about people
development. It reflects your ability to
develop and reproduce other leaders to
become an effective leader in the organisation
your serve.
This is the stage where your
leadership gains depth, sustainability,
and begins to extend your influence
beyond what you can accomplish on
your own. This transforms you to
become a highly effective leader in
the organisation.
Scaling beyond what you alone
can achieve is the result of
investing into others and helping
them become better leaders, and
competent managers. Effective
leaders are good, but not great.
LEVEL
4:
PEOPLE
DEVELOPMENT
As leaders produce more leaders, their impact can be seen across the
organisation as it achieves quarterly and annual goals. More leaders the
organisation produces, bigger the things the organisations can take on and
achieve excellence. Success breeds success...
OUTCOME
Level 5: Pinnacle
The Executive
Level 5 leaders develop other leaders so
that they reach Level 4.
Individuals who reach Level 5 lead so well
for so long that they create a legacy of
leadership in the organization they serve.
Pinnacle leaders stand out from
everyone else. They are a cut above
and they seem to bring success with
them wherever they go.
Leadership at this high level lifts
the entire organization and creates
an environment that benefits
everyone in it, contributing to their
success.
LEVEL
5:
PINNACLE
Level 5 leaders often possess an influence that transcends the organization
and the industry the leader works in. These leaders go on to be the
transformational leaders that shape the future that we live in by leading
disruptive and innovative organisation.
OUTCOME
Leadership is a
lifelong journey!
In pursuit of excellence!!
Crossing the chasm from
level 2 to level 3. Learning
how to Manage through
managers is the hardest.
Transition from contributing team
member to competent leader
It takes 12 to 15 years to
become a level 3 leader
Level 1: Position
Level 2: Permission
Level 3: Production
Top roles in a company are few and
increasingly difficult to get
Level 5 The Executive 1 in 100,000
Level 4 Effective Leader 1 in 10,000
Level 3 Competent Leader 1 in 1,000
Level 2 Contributing Team Member 1 in 100
Level 1 Highly Capable Individual 1 in 10
Only a few will reach
level 4 and beyond
Developing soft skills
matter more for level 3
leaders and above...
Level 5 Leadership

yourself in the service of others
