Learning Goals and Scales

  1. 1. Top-performing urban school district in Florida Palm Beach Model of Instruction Learning Goals & Scales
  2. 2. Top-performing urban school district in Florida Learning Goals • Participants will understand that learning goals and scales must show a progression of knowledge based on the standards. • Participants will create daily learning targets for formative purposes that correspond with the scale (i.e. assessments, activities and assignments).
  3. 3. Score Description of Scale Score 4.0 More Complex Goals In addition to score 3.0 performance, the participant will be able to : • Create learning targets and performance scales and implement routines for using a scale and its targets in the classroom. TARGET 3.0 The Goal Participants will be able to: • Write student-friendly goal(s) for the Unit with scale(s). • Break the learning goal(s) into chunks of critical information through a progression of knowledge. • Create daily learning targets for formative purposes that correspond with the scale (i.e. assessments, activities and assignments). 2.0 Simpler Goal Participants will be able to: • Describe the critical features of a learning goal and scale. • Understand the two types of knowledge (declarative & procedural) found in the standards. • Understand the relationship of a scale and its relationship to taxonomy (Bloom’s, Webb’s, Marzano). 1.0 With help, partial success at score 2.0 and 3.0 content.
  4. 4. Top-performing urban school district in Florida • How do you help your students identify what they need to learn? • How do you verify that your students can identify what they need to learn? Questions to Stimulate Thinking
  5. 5. Top-performing urban school district in Florida Clarifications: Learning Goals & Scales • Articulates distinct levels of knowledge and skill relative to achieving mastery of the standard(s). • A progression of knowledge. • A clear criteria for success. Students understand if they hit the learning target.
  6. 6. Top-performing urban school district in Florida • Have to be based on benchmark/standard. • Can be on one standard or multiple. • A unit of instruction can have 1 or multiple LG’s. Clarifications: Learning Goals & Scales
  7. 7. Top-performing urban school district in Florida • Scale(s) should include standard mastery at Level 3. • Level 2 should include foundational standard(s) knowledge/skills. • Level 1 can be generic statement or prerequisite knowledge/skills. • Level 4 can be generic statement or specific content/skills beyond Level 3. Clarifications: Learning Goals & Scales
  8. 8. Top-performing urban school district in Florida • There are 2 templates that are being promoted but are not mandated. • LG and Scale are to be student friendly and should be used as a central focus of daily learning. Clarifications: Learning Goals & Scales

  10. 10. Top-performing urban school district in Florida FS: The teacher provides rigorous learning goals and/or targets, both of which are embedded in a performance scale that includes application of knowledge. DE: Students understand the learning goal and what the scale means. Element 1: Providing Rigorous Learning Goals & Performance Scales
  11. 11. Top-performing urban school district in Florida Impact of Learning Goals & Scales * Only when utilized correctly and consistently, while also monitored for the desired effect. Learning Goals Students will understand _______________________________. Students will understand ________ and be able to___________. • Procedural Learning Goal • Declarative Learning Goal • Combination of the Two Types Students will be able to ________________________________.

  14. 14. Top-performing urban school district in Florida Making the Distinction: Common Language Learning Goal Learning Targets Activities & Assignments • A Learning Goal identifies what students will learn or be able to do over time and within a unit of instruction. • Created from state standards they represent essential knowledge and skills. • Day-to-Day Learning Targets that scaffold with escalating complexity and align with the increasingly difficult levels of a taxonomy and scale. • Procedural or Declarative. • Learning Activities & Assignments are designed to scaffold with increasing complexity to advance students toward mastery of the Learning Goal.
  15. 15. Top-performing urban school district in Florida Making the Distinction: Example Subject Learning Goal Learning Target Activity Assignment Science Students will be able to identify similarities and differences between various celestial bodies in the solar system. Students will be able to identify key characteristics of and relationship between the earth and the moon. Students will watch a video that demonstrates the relationship between the earth and the moon and the place of these bodies in the solar system. Students will construct a model in small groups to represent understanding. Read pp. 24-32 and complete a graphic organizer that will represent individual understanding of the configuration of planets in the solar system.
  16. 16. Top-performing urban school district in Florida Making the Distinction: Example Scale Description 4.0 In addition to score 3.0 performance, the student demonstrates in- depth inferences and applications that go beyond what was taught. 3.0 The student will be able to • Examine similarities and differences between various planets in the solar system. 2.0 The student will be able to: • Recognize critical features of the solar system. • Recall important details about the solar system. 1.0 With help, partial success at score 2.0 content and score 3.0 content.
  17. 17. Top-performing urban school district in Florida • Group Standards using Florida State Standards. Unpack the Standards • Write student-friendly Goal(s) for the Unit with Scale(s). • Create Targets. • Break Targets into chunks and critical information. • Create daily learning targets for formative purposes that correspond with the scale (ie. assessments, activities and assignments). Organize the Scale • Communicate Learning Goal(s) and Scale(s) to students. • Use Scale(s) to Track Student Progress and Celebrate Success towards the Learning Goal(s). Implement the Scale Creating Scales: Action Plan
  18. 18. Top-performing urban school district in Florida Creating Scales: Taxonomy is Key Foundational Targets – 1.0 & 2.0 • Identify the knowledge and skills that are key to learning and building towards the standard(s) (unpacking). • Move down a level of cognitive complexity on the taxonomy. • Build from prior knowledge, make links to what was previously addressed.
  19. 19. Top-performing urban school district in Florida Learning Goal Targets - 3.0 • The knowledge and skills that are key to learning and demonstrating mastery of the standard(s) (chunked). • Same cognitive level of complexity of the standard(s). Creating Scales: Taxonomy is Key
  20. 20. Top-performing urban school district in Florida More Complex Targets - 4.0 • Knowledge and Skills that go beyond the standard(s). • Move up a level of cognitive complexity on the taxonomy. • Optional: In addition to score 3.0 performance, the student demonstrates in-depth inferences and applications that go beyond what was taught." 22. 22. Top-performing urban school district in Florida FS: The teacher facilitates tracking of student progress on the learning goal using a formative approach to assessment. DE: Students understand their current status on the scale and can articulate their progress toward the learning goal.
  23. 23. Top-performing urban school district in Florida FS: The teacher provides students with recognition of their current status and their knowledge gain relative to the learning goal. DE: Students feel pride in their knowledge gain and accomplishments, and they are motivated to continue progress toward the goal.
