Are we up against psychopaths? (with notes)

  1. 1. Jane  Morton   2015
  2. 2. Or  ‘Social  Dominance  Orienta6on’?   •  correlates  nega6vely  with  empathy,  altruism  and  honesty     •  part  of  the  ‘dark  triad’  of  personality  (narcissism,   Machiavellianism  and  psychopathy),     •  with  a  common  ‘dark  core’  consis6ng  of  manipula6on  (or   dishonesty),  and  callousness  (or  lack  of  empathy).  manifests   “at  a  group  level  with  a  poli6cally  oppressive  style.”     •  aims  to  maximize  inequality  between  social  groups     •  requires  a  capacity,  if  not  a  zeal,  to  oppress  and  subordinate   other  human  beings.       [Jones,  D.N.,  &  Figueredo,  A.J.  (2013).  The  core  of  darkness:  uncovering  the   heart  of  the  Dark  Triad.  European  Journal  of  Personality,  27,  521-‐531.]
  3. 3. “The  climate  is  always  changing.”     Not  all  climate  change  deniers  are   psychopaths.  Many  have  been  misled.
  4. 4. Too  much  self-‐flagella6on?
  5. 5. Yes  it’s  important  to  test,  refine   and  target  our  message.  But  …
  6. 6. Most  people  want  clean  energy  and  a  safe   future  for  their  kids.  Why  is  it  so  hard?
  7. 7. We  are  up  against  possibly  the  biggest   disinforma6on  campaign  in  history.

  9. 9. 1000  corpora6ons  are  responsible  for   most  of  the  world’s  GHG  emissions
  10. 10. Psychopaths  tend   to  rise  to  the  top   in  organisa6ons.       Especially  in   unethical   businesses?     [Clive  et  al  (2010)  greater  levels  of  psychopathy  at   more  senior  levels  of  corpora6ons  than  at  more   junior  levels.]
  11. 11. They  ‘own’  poli6cians  and  they  own  the  media.
  12. 12. They  corrupt  our  democracy

  20. 20. Recognising  that  the  earth  is  already  too  hot     and  that  our  remaining  carbon  budget  is  zero,     we  will  phase  out  fossil  fuels  at  emergency  speed,     move  rapidly  to  a  zero  emissions  economy,  and       draw-‐down  the  excess  GHGs  using  safe  methods.   “Only  568  gigatonnes  can  safely  be  burnt”???!!!       OR  …
