Thoughts on George Marshall and Naomi Klein

  1. 1. Thoughts on George Marshall and Naomi Klein: a critical anthropological perspective Hans A Baer Presentation at the Psychology of Safe Climate Conference, 21 March 2015 2014 - Saw publication of books by George Marshall and Naomi Klein o DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT: WHY OUR BRAINS ARE WIRED TO IGNORE CLIMATE CHANGE o THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING: CAPITALISM VS CLIMATE Heard Marshall speak 3 times in Melbourne - Including at Psychologists for a Safe Climate workshop Marshall - Has multivalent or multifactorial theory of climate change o Lacks any readily identifiable external enemy o Has dispersed responsibility and diffused impacts o Maybe this is a view that is consistent with the individualistic perspective of mainstream psychology Klein - Takes a more systemic view of climate change o One that is more consistent with social scientific thinking - Identifies capitalism as main driver of anthropogenic CC today - View consistent with the ideas of eco-socialists or eco-Marxists - Consistent with my own view o GLOBAL CAPITALISM AND CLIMATE CHANGE: THE NEED FOR AN ALTERNATIVE SYSTEM (2012) o THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF CLIMATE CHANGE (2014) Klein - Not really saying anything new about driver of CC o But as world-renowned journalist has a much wider audience than academics such as Foster and myself Marshall - Would like to convince everyone about gravity of climate change o Conservatives § Some are denialists • George W Bush
  2. 2. • John Howard • Tony Abbott § Some are CC realists • David Cameron • Angela Merkel • Malcolm Turnbull Asked Marshall at workshop - How are we going to get conservatives to recognise global capitalism as the source of CC o Response was that was not focus of workshop o Perhaps would get back to it later o Asked him about 30 minutes before end if we going to get to the issue § Not enough time My own take on creating safe climate - Take on capitalism while doing techno-fixes and steep emissions taxes at sites of production, pushing for public ownership of means of production, and pushing for social parity and justice - Part and parcel of creating alternative world system o Democratic eco-socialism Klein - Does not explicitly go that far but does make some good recommendations o Favours planned economy o Public ownership of certain enterprises § Energy production o Guaranteed minimal income o Close tax havens o 1% billionaire’s tax o Drastically reducing military budgets o $50 a tonne carbon tax in developed countries o Phasing out of fossil fuel subsidies - Calls for ‘rebuilding and reinventing the very idea of the collective, the communal, the commons, the civil, and the civic after so many decades of attack and neglect’
  3. 3. These steps for me - Would be part and parcel or creating a democratic eco-socialist world system o Part of my interest in developing anthropology of the future Klein - Very progressive green social democrat Democratic eco-socialism - Political economy committed to meeting basic needs o Net zero growth economy o Growth for poor and de-growth for affluent - High degree of social equality - Public ownership of means of production o Will take new left parties around world - Democratic processes o Representative and participatory - Commitment to simpler way o Environmental sustainability o Safe climate - Environmental sustainability and safe climate - -
