  5. 5. TSLEIL-WAUTUTH NATION THE PEOPLE OF THE INLET Burrard Inlet Carrying Capacity • Over 90% of the protein in ancestral TWN diets came from abundant marine foods harvested from Burrard Inlet • Herring extirpated by 1885 • Bivalve harvest closed in 1972 • With loss of herring and closure of bivalve harvest, carrying capacity stressed
  6. 6. TSLEIL-WAUTUTH NATION THE PEOPLE OF THE INLET 2005 TWN Marine Stewardship Plan Objectives • To eat healthy, wild foods • To practice cultural activities in a clean environment • To devise and manage a long-term restoration plan • To reduce ongoing environmental impacts • To ensure that environmental protection legislation is enforced • To discuss compensation for past environmental degradation
  7. 7. TSLEIL-WAUTUTH NATION THE PEOPLE OF THE INLET Measureable Objective • Obtain 10% of our food (measured as a portion of our protein requirements) from Burrard Inlet by 2040
  8. 8. TSLEIL-WAUTUTH NATION THE PEOPLE OF THE INLET 2017 Burrard Inlet Action Plan Objective • Identify strategic near-term actions that can be taken to improve the health and integrity of Burrard Inlet by 2025

  10. 10. TSLEIL-WAUTUTH NATION THE PEOPLE OF THE INLET Stressors Example Sources Acidification Climate change Habitat loss Invasive species Land use/cover modifications Marine transport Nearshore modifications Pollution & contamination Trespass—people, light, noise, visual distractions
  11. 11. TSLEIL-WAUTUTH NATION THE PEOPLE OF THE INLET Management Goals • Sufficient ecological representation & integrity for meaningful exercise of TWN rights in our territory, including resource harvest and cultural practices • Sustain the emotional, psychological, spiritual, physical, and cultural health of our community • Provide for economic livelihood sufficiency and opportunity over the short and long-term • Meet international climate commitments
  12. 12. TSLEIL-WAUTUTH NATION THE PEOPLE OF THE INLET • What three objectives will contribute most to the overall management goal of ecological representation and integrity in Burrard Inlet? Do management strategies exist to achieve those three objectives? • How would you propose developing a consensus set of management objectives & strategies for Burrard Inlet? Discussion: management objectives & strategies
