  5. 5. SMU Classification: Restricted Why measure journal impact? ◦ Attempt to measure quality and prestige of journals ◦ Note that it was not meant to evaluate quality of the individual articles in the journals
  6. 6. SMU Classification: Restricted Journal Metrics: Journal Impact Factor No. of cites received by articles published in 2013 & 2014, in year 2015 Total no. of citable articles from that journal in 2013 & 2014 2015 Impact Factor = What does this number mean? How frequently an average article in this journal has been cited in year 2015 Source of data? Web of Science citation data How to find this number? Journal Citation Report (JCR) subscribed by SMU Libraries
  7. 7. SMU Classification: Restricted How to access Journal Citation Report (JCR) 1. Go to SMU Libraries website (library.smu.edu.sg) 2. Click on Databases, search for ‘JCR’ 3. Click on ‘Journal Citation Report’ 4. Search for the journal title
  8. 8. SMU Classification: Restricted JCR > Journal title search > Full record Click on Psychology, Social to see journals in this category Type journal title & pick from list or click search
  9. 9. SMU Classification: Restricted JCR > Categories search
  10. 10. SMU Classification: Restricted Journal Metrics: CiteScore Source of data? Scopus citation data How to find this number? Scopus > Sources Also at http://journalmetrics.scopus.com [Free] No. of cites received by documents published in 2012, 2013 & 2014, in year 2015 Total no. of documents from that journal in 2012, 2013 & 2014 2015 CiteScore =
  11. 11. SMU Classification: Restricted Journal Metrics: SCImago Journal Rank Source of data? Scopus citation data How to find this number? Scopus > Sources Also at http://journalmetrics.scopus.com [Free] SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) expresses the average number of weighted citations received in the selected year by the documents published in the selected journal in the three previous years
  12. 12. SMU Classification: Restricted How to find CiteScore & SJR in Scopus 1. Go to SMU Libraries website (library.smu.edu.sg) 2. Click on Databases, search for ‘Scopus’ 3. Click on ‘Scopus’, click on “Sources”
  13. 13. SMU Classification: Restricted Scopus > Sources > Journal title search
  14. 14. SMU Classification: Restricted Journal Metrics > Title search [http://journalmetrics.scopus.com]
  15. 15. SMU Classification: Restricted Journal Metrics > Subject area search
  16. 16. SMU Classification: Restricted Things to Note ◦ You cannot compare impact factor/ CiteScore/SJR across different subject areas ◦ It gives you an idea about the quality of a journal, but not the quality of an article
  17. 17. SMU Classification: Restricted Comparison of Top Journals ◦ Academy of Management Journal JIF = 6.233 | CiteScore = 8.71 | SJR = 10.317 ◦ Journal of Finance JIF = 5.290 | CiteScore = 6.30 | SJR = 14.546 ◦ Quarterly Journal of Economics JIF = 5.538 | CiteScore = 9.59 | SJR = 20.761 ◦ Journal of Applied Psychology JIF = 3.810 | CiteScore = 5.20 | SJR = 4.641 ◦ Political Analysis JIF = 3.419 | CiteScore = 5.86 | SJR = 7.155 ◦ ACM Computing Surveys JIF = 5.243 | CiteScore = 10.32 | SJR = 3.405 ◦ Nature JIF = 38.138 | CiteScore = 14.38 | SJR = 21.936
  18. 18. SMU Classification: Restricted Types of Research Metrics • Journal Impact Factor, CiteScore, SJR Journal Metrics • h-index, FWCI Author Metrics • Citation count, FWCI, Altmetrics Article-level Metrics
  19. 19. SMU Classification: Restricted Article-Level Metrics ALMs measures the impact of individual articles Citation Count Can be found from a variety of sources: WOS, Scopus, Google Scholar. Altmetrics • A non-traditional metrics to capture influences outside academia • Capture interest on social media, readership, discussions and so on • Gives indication of immediate impact compared to citations Field Weight Citation Impact (FWCI) Can be found from a variety of sources: InCites, Scopus
  20. 20. SMU Classification: Restricted What is FWCI? ◦ Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) indicates how the number of citations received by a publication compares with the average number of citations received by all other similar publications in the data universe ◦ Where 1 is average and the higher the ratio the better ◦ Normalised for Subject area (of journal), Publication year, Document type 20
  21. 21. SMU Classification: Restricted How to access WOS / Scopus / Google Scholar for citation count 1. In the database, search for the article title
  22. 22. SMU Classification: Restricted WOS > Article title search Click on Times Cited to see details of citing articles
  23. 23. SMU Classification: Restricted Scopus > Article title search Scroll down the page to see more metrics, including FWCI
  24. 24. SMU Classification: Restricted GS > Article title search [http://scholar.google.com]
  25. 25. SMU Classification: Restricted Altmetrics Usage Data • Clicks & page views • Downloads Discussions on the open web • Blog posts • Comments, shares, likes in Facebook, Twitter, etc. Interest in reading/citing the work • Bookmarks, saves, subscriptions, citation exports • Readership on citation managers such as Mendeley - a good early indicator of future citations

  28. 28. SMU Classification: Restricted Types of Research Metrics • Journal Impact Factor, CiteScore, SJR Journal Metrics • h-index, FWCI Author Metrics • Citation count, FWCI, Altmetrics Article-level Metrics
  29. 29. SMU Classification: Restricted Author Metrics H-index measures both productivity and citation impact What does this number mean? If I have an h-index of 5, I have at least 5 publications that have been cited at least 5 times. Source of data? H-index from different sources can be different! Web of Science | Scopus | Google Scholar How to find this number? Web of Science (Researcher ID) Scopus (Scopus Author ID) Google Scholar only if you have a Google Scholar Profile)
  30. 30. SMU Classification: Restricted Author Metrics Field Weighted Citation Impact What does this number mean? If I have an FWCI of 2, my impact is 200% better than average for the same type of publications, same subject areas and same publication years. [Note: Less reliable if < 20 publications] Source of data? This metric is calculated using Web of Science / InCites | Scopus / SciVal How to find this number? InCites for individual publications or authors or groups or institutions SciVal for authors or groups or institutions Contact your research librarian
  31. 31. SMU Classification: Restricted How to access WOS / Scopus / Google Scholar for h-index 1. In the database, search for author’s name
