PROBLEM • Two epidemics are causing tree mortality in major portions of the United States. • In the East, the pest is the emerald ash borer, a non- native insect which is effectively killing 100% of the untreated Ash in the eastern half of the country. • In the West, the U.S. Forest Service reports that pine bark beetles have killed 50% of the Ponderosa pine in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
