Lab 7 Cardiovascular Response To Exercise

 1. 2. Materials Used

Tilt table

Cycle ergometer

Stethoscope

Sphygmomanometer

 2. 3. Methods: Tilt Table

BP and HR will be taken at supine (rest) and 70° on the tilt table (at 70° once positioned and also 2 minutes later)

There is a degree gauge under the table so you know when its at 70°
 3. 4. Methods: during exercise

Take BP and HR at rest and then during 2 different exercise bouts (1 and 2 kp)

Be sure subject continues to pedal during BP reading
 4. 5. Using the stethoscope Most importantly remove sweatshirt or pull sleeves Up so you have direct skin contact, so you can hear The heart properly 1. Make sure the ear pieces face forward and down Before placing the ears (this is so it follows the Eustachian tubes in the ear 2. Tap on the stethoscope head to make sure you can Hear noise (do lightly because it can be loud) 3. Place over the brachial artery and be sure you can Hear the heart.
 5. 6. How to take blood pressure (BP) Place the sphyg on the subject’s arm with the cuff belly covering at least 80% of the arm for proper reading. Place the artery symbol above the brachial artery (this is where you are going to place the head of the stethoscope You want to make sure the valve is open when inflating the cuff (this is done by turning the valve counter-clockwise) inflate up to between 180-200 mmHg and then you want to slowly release the air, the first sound you hear is the systolic BP and the 5 th (last sound) is diastolic. Be sure to release all air once you obtained the BP reading.
 6. 7. Operating the cycle ergometer Turn on the bike and make sure the Green light is on Make sure the cycle computer is showing The main menu (as pictured)
 7. 8. Operating the cycle ergometer Press 2 for manual/work test The screen will then ask about the Subject’s gender, age, and weight All of this information is unnecessary so Just press enter to skip through.
 8. 9. Operating the cycle ergometer For the purpose of this lab we will use The power (watts) and the force (Kp) modes. Press 3 for watts and press 2 for Kp Always choose the manual setting by Pressing 1
 9. 10. Operating the cycle ergometer The cycle is all ready to go (the force Or power will need to adjusted and will Keep track of the subject’s rpm, their Kp or Watt setting as well as timing the workout Bout and keeping track of the person’s Kcals for the bout To increase the force or power setting by One hundredeth kp or watt press 7 and Decrease by one hundredeth press 4
 10. 11. Operating the cycle ergometer To increase the kp or watt by the one tenth Press 8 and to decrease by one tenth press 5 To increase kp or watt by one press 9 and to Decrease by one press 6
