  2. 2. Project Background <ul><li>NSW Treasury funds a program called Catchment Action NSW. </li></ul><ul><li>Project was developed by II NSW, DECCW and Lachlan CMA </li></ul><ul><li>Project was approved for 12 months. </li></ul>

Project Objectives <ul><li>To develop a soil carbon market based instrument that: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Provide an incentive for increasing carbon sequestration in soils </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>can be adapted and applied to a broad range of Australian soil types, landuses and climatic regions </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Facilitates and encourages the development of soil carbon estimation, measurement and verification protocols and procedures </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Can be transitioned into the national ETS at a later date. </li></ul></ul>

Project Scope <ul><li>Identification of landscapes and farming systems that would optimise carbon sequestration </li></ul><ul><li>Fill the data gaps that exist by undertaking soil carbon baseline sampling within the identified landscapes – across the full range of systems in the Lachlan catchment </li></ul><ul><li>Establish landholder focus groups to test the proposed MBI </li></ul>
